<p>This book tells the story of a distinctive American university whose origins date back, in a limited sense, to the Gold Rush of 1849. Founder Myron Angel, a West Point student who was lured away from his studies to become an Argonaut, found little gold but founded a small vocational residential coeducational secondary school that ultimately blossomed into two widely acclaimed universities, one in San Luis Obispo and the other in Pomona. From Copenhagen to Singapore, polytechnic schools were founded about the turn of the century based on the concepts of "learning by doing" and "training the hand as well as the head." So successful were "The Polytechnic's" programs in California that they were copied in countless high schools and junior colleges throughout the state.
