Between 1948, when I completed my Ph.D. and became qualified to serve as a graduate advisor, and the summer of 1977 I guided a total of 73 individuals through the Ph.D. degree. Along the way I also had many M. A. candidates, but I decided, in the present study, to concentrate on doctoral candidates. During the same period around 30 additional persons either voluntarily left me for other advisors, or were rejected and chose other advisors, or stayed with me but drifted away from sociology, or failed to negotiate the obstacles of the Ph.D. The present monograph is based on a sample of 100 Ph.D. candidates of which three fourth successfully completed the degree with me.
