But this was not always so. in Yellowstone's early years, when the science of wildlife management was new, it was widely believed that the numbers of elk had to be held down in order to prevent "overgrazing" of the vegetation - particularly on Yellowstone's vast northern range, Here, too, the wolf was all but eliminated in the misguided belief that they were "very destructive of game". Wildlife in Transition responds to these concerns, while at the same time celebrating the depth of the fascinating scientific research that has been undertaken in this magnificent wilderness.</p>
