Their fascination with and appreciation for Maine and its people triggered the production of five "Bert and I" records, from which fourteen tales have been selected for this book. In the intervening years Marshall Dodge has lectured and performed throughout the country. He wrote the book 'Frost You Say?' and started the Maine Festival of the Arts. He has appeared in the PBS productions A Down East Smile-In, A Fresh Breeze Down East, and In the Kitchen. Robert Bryan, an Episcopal clergyman and 12,000 hour bush pilot, is founder and director of the Quebec-Labrador Foundation, which for over twenty years has conducted programs in education, community service, and environmental resource management in northern Maine and eastern Canada. Joining Dodge and Bryan as illustrator of 'Bert and I' is Maine native Mark Andres, a 1981 graduate of Williams College and son of illustrator Charles J. Andres."

Their fascination and appreciation for Maine and its people triggered the production of several “Bert and I” records, from which 14 stories were selected for the first edition of this book. The iconic Bert and I stories were first created by Yale University students Marshall Dodge and Robert Bryan in the late 1950s and performed around campus. The two amateur storytellers soon recorded a short ten-inch album of eleven stories for friends and family, but ultimately pressed just a few hundred. However, growing popularity prompted them in 1958 to record and release the seminal commercial album of New England humor and storytelling-Bert and I ... And Other Stories From Down East. Featuring nineteen stories, the album depicted Maine fishermen and woodsmen with dry, classic humor and set the tone and direction of the genre for decades. The duo then made More Bert and I, adding fourteen more stories, telling tales of New England characters and situations with extra-dry wit and subtle humor. This CD combines the original Bert and I album and More Bert and I into one CD.

These three stories did not appear on the commercial album or were changed. Eventually, Dodge and Bryan recorded three more Bert and I albums together. They remain the godfathers of Down East humor.
