In this book an important and original approach is made to the meaning and purpose of portraiture. The author's aim is to introduce the eighteenth-century portrait according to the types of sitter shown, rather than artist by artist. The portrait of a soldier, for example, a young lady of 'sensibility', or a child, is examined for the ideas and meaning it contains, and for what it tells us about contemporary society.
