<p>Excerpt from Report on the Commercial Relations of the United States With All Foreign Nations, 1857, Vol. 3These documents are the answers of United States consuls to the circular of this Depart ment of March 15, 1854, already referred to, issued with a view to obtain the requisite materials for this Report. No very considerable portion of each of these returns, however, it was soon found, could be made available in the work; and, although parts of some of them might not be deemed of the first importance, still, as much valuable information would nuques tionably be withheld by their entire suppression, no better mode of making them serviceable could be thought of than to present them, with a few exceptions, exactly as received - such modifications, in form and substance, alone being made as seemed demanded by regard to uniformity and propriety. The authors of these returns have thus the credit of their service, when it has proved creditable, as it generally has, by having their names appended to their works, while they thus, also, receive salutary encouragement to make still more vigorous and useful efforts in the same manner in future.To make a digest of the varied and comprehensive commercial intelligence conveyed by these returns - the only remaining mode of disposing of them if they were neither to be published entire nor suppressed - would have involved an expenditure of time which could not, under all the circumstances of the case, be seriously contemplated, however valuable such digest, when completed, might have proved to be.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. <p>Excerpt from Production and Thrift: Agricultural War BookOn Thursday last, writes a London correspondent, under date of Oct. 5, a church service such as has never before been held in London was celebrated when the Lord Mayor of London and the sheriffs paid a state visit to the old London church of St. Andrew Undershaft to attend the annual harvest thanksgiving service of the Baltic Exchange and the National Food Stuffs association. The service was noteworthy in being one of thanksgiving for the bountiful Canadian harvest. The Bishop of Willesden, whom you know better under the name of Bishop Perrin, former Bishop of British Columbia, gave the address in this, his parish church in the heart of old London, and to the assembled wheat kings of Britain, told a simple but eloquent record of the work of the Canadian wheat growers on the prairies. He gave a word picture of the great grain-raising areas of western Canada, told of the determination of Canadian farmers, when the question of food supplies for the motherland became acute, to provide all that was required, and their redemption of that promise in the production of a record crop.
