As journalists, both had covered the Vietnam War until 1972. after twenty long years—of Stalinism, boat people, Hollywood heroics and French nostalgia—they decided it was time to go back. Vietnam, they believed, was not a story which “you could simply stop watching and switch off.” They traveled from South to North, from Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) to Hanoi, exploring memories of the war and the contradictions of peace, looking and listening with a sensitivity and sense of solidarity all too rare in travel writing. The result is an extraordinary account of a country transformed and of a people, victors and victims together, betrayed on all sides, coming back to life. In Hanoi they find none of the grim austerity imagined by foreigners, but rather a city of beauty now ‘opening’ to capitalism partly thanks to the experiences and money orders of workers sent in their thousands to Poland of the GDR. At Khe Sanh, on the bloodiest battlefield of the war, children dig for shrapnel to sell for a cent a kilo; lovers stroll on the beach at De Nang, where the first US troops landed. Loudspeakers in the street still broadcast a litany of production figures, but they are drowned out by Paul Anka and the Everly Brothers. Saigon, the author discover, has easily triumphed over Stalin’s murderous economic planning. But it may face a tougher adversary in capitalism, whose grim ‘post-communist’ program can be found in a single neon sign: “Kenwood-HiFi-Stereo-Night-Club-Karaoke-VIP-Room-Discotheque-Saigon-Pub-Health-Centre-Coffee-Shop.” As rich in political perceptions as it is in memorable images, Return to Vietnam shatters the myths about a country which the West fought over, flattened and forgot.

Le volume est constitué de 120 photos, sur 160 pages, avec une courte préface de l’auteur et des légendes reprenant soit des textes de l’auteur, soit des extraits des dialogues des personnages photographiés (tirés des films et des reportages).Le sujet est celui qui tient le plus à cœur de Depardon : les paysans. On sait que lui-même est né dans une ferme et que son frère est toujours agriculteur. L’album commence par des photos de la ferme du Garet, où il né, et des photos de ses parents et de sa famille. Suivent les photos que Depardon a faites, depuis une trentaine d’années et particulièrement pendant une période de 10 ans, tandis qu’il préparait puis tournait les 3 films qu’il a consacrés aux paysans de moyenne montagne, suivant, d’année en année, les mêmes personnages, certains jusqu’à leur mort.Il se dégage de l’ensemble, outre la grande qualité des photos, l’impression d’un voyage dans un monde tout proche de nous et extrêmement émouvant.Il y a 10 ans, il intéressait peu le public ou alors seulement par la nostalgie apitoyée. Aujourd’hui, l’agriculture revient au premier plan des préoccupations, en France et dans le monde. L’album prend ainsi tout son sens.

La Terre des paysans

Ce livre est né du désir très ancien de Raymond Depardon de photographier la France, avec vérité, en guettant les traces de l’homme sur le territoire, un peu à la manière dont le photographe Walker Evans, admiré de Raymond Depardon, a photographié les États-Unis au début du XXe siècle.Les photographies sont prises, comme au tout début de l’histoire de cet art, à l’aide d’une chambre posée sur un pied, contrainte qui a aidé l’artiste à ne faire qu’« une » photographie de chaque lieu, à assumer l’angle de vue, à voir frontalement. Raymond Depardon a visité presque toutes les régions de France, dans un fourgon aménagé. Il s’est totalement imprégné des lieux. Il s’est concentré sur les sous-préfectures ― un espace jusque-là fui par l’artiste, désormais saisi du désir de le comprendre, afin de voir quelle était la relation de l’homme à son espace de vie.L’album regroupe trois cent photographies en couleurs, grand format. Il est assorti d’une préface de Raymond Depardon. C’est la France réelle. Le livre est coédité avec la BNF. Les photographies y feront l’objet d’une grande exposition.

La France de Raymond Depardon

In 1980 Raymond Depardon fulfils an order for the Sunday Times Magazine, but the reportage will never be published. The pictures will wait in the photographer's boxes until the exhibition Un moment si doux (Such a sweet moment) at the Grand Palais (14th November 2013 - 10th February 2014), where the audience discovers a sample of the Glasgow series and goes into raptures about it. Depardon grasps the light of Scotland as never before and sublimes the end of a working world. Glasgow's cloudy skies and soaked ground give an extraordinary beauty to the wanderings of working people, hanging around in front of the shops, walking towards the factories' walls and even playing about ruined houses. William Boyd, who is of Scottish descent and was educated in Glasgow, writes the preface of the book, which is bilingual (English-French). Here we publish the complete reportage: 72 colour photographs. The pictures will appear without captions, and only a short bilingual text by Depardon will introduce the reportage, behind Boyd's foreword.
