Man Ray found the surreal in the commonplace, particularly in the female form, and this has made his photography some of the world's most accessible and recognizable: his ubiquitous La Violin d'Ingres creates a cello from a woman's torso with the addition of curliqued vents inked on her sides; his classic image of shining cinematic tears glistening on a powdered cheek has been tucked into mirror frames all over the world. This collection of more than 130 pictures dated between 1920 and 1950 covers not only Ray's work as one of the world's leading avant-garde artists--he was a tireless experimenter who participated in the Cubist, Dadaist and Surrealist art movements--but also his commercial work. It includes fashion photography and advertising images; portraits of many artists, including Marcel Proust, Marcel Duchamp and Andre Breton; and a portfolio of 26 Femmes. Art dealer Giorgio Marconi, who met May Ray in 1966 in Milan, contributes an insightful interview.

As the Velvet Underground put it, "I'll be your mirror, reflect what you are, in case you don't know." Sound Zero opens on the Velvet Underground's work with Warhol, and follows the close, even mimetic, relationship between Pop Art and pop music through the psychedelic explosion of the 70s and the graffiti, hip-hop and skate punk of the 80s and beyond. From Pop's simple and direct communication, colorful and clean, through psychedelia's overabundance of symphonic chaos, to the remixed and appropriated work of street artists and musicians, the interrelations are clear, and clearly influential. Sound Zero tracks them in over 100 color illustrations of paintings, photographs, objects, installations, graphics, placards, video and paintings, and a parallel universe of record covers, posters and performances. It features works by Robert Rauschenberg, Raymond Pettibon, Richard Hamilton, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Chris Johanson, Barry McGee and Ari Marcopoulos; an interview with Aaron Rose; and a timeline showing developments in Pop, psychedelic and street art alongside the history of popular music.

Franco Vaccari, born in Modena, Italy, in 1936, has shown his work at four Venice Biennales to date (1972, 1980, 1993 and 1995), the Centre Pompidou in Paris and P.S.1 in New York. He's also well known in Italy as a critic and author. Exhibitions in Real Time is the first monograph to assemble his recurring works of that title. It focuses particularly on one early and better-known iteration, his 1972 Biennale solo show, and also documents 35 performances over the following 30 years of activity. The 1972 Exhibition in Real Time, known as Leave a Photographic Trace of Your Passing, set a simple photo kiosk into the gallery with a sign asking visitors to add a picture to the wall. It was and remains both an ideal conceptualist work and an emblem of the artist's interest in causing an event without controlling its results--revealing of both Vaccari and the era.
