The books and illustrations are loosely based on meerkats - there are two main meerkat families, the Mortimers and the Brians, that feature throughout Henrietta's books, Oscar's Birthday being the first.  As the books go on, Henrietta begins to develop each character mostly through the eyes of Henratty Mortimer and this book tells a story of what happens on Oscar's sixth birthday when The Mortimers pay an uninvited visit and get caught hiding in the bushes but then join in with the birthday celebrations and how the meerkats interact with one another, the games they play, you see their mischievous side, the look of excitement on their faces when they see all the lovely food and when Oscar blows out the candles on his giant birthday cake and the sheer look of joy when the presents are opened.  All beautifully captured in the wonderful illustrations.   The book really reflects how the author saw things when she went to birthday parties as a child.  In fact, throughout all the books Henratty wears a red cape and beret (again the author had a red cape and beret as a child and just adored these garments).  The book also tries to light-heartedly keep in line with the way meerkats behave and how they look out for their own and you will see this in characters like Jack who is always doing watch duty on the mount as he is so mischievous and loves playing games.  He lives in a fantasy world sometimes and that comes out in the books.  Henratty too is a very strong individual who speaks her mind and defends her honour.  Mama Katie is also fair, firm and decisive and able to take control because of her matriarchal instinct. Age Range:  3-7

This book is for children of all ages and adults too despite the categorisation: the author's concept when she writes the Henratty Mortimer series of books is to give the parents just as much enjoyment in reading the book to their children who are enjoying listening to the book being read. The author decided to use meerkats when she saw these adorable and very funny creatures on her trip to Newquay Zoo in Cornwall as they made her chuckle so much. There is a character that every individual (child or adult) will love. From series 2 to 5 of Henratty Mortimer books the meerkat always have some sort of mystery to solve, the author never planned it that way but when she took pen to paper the stories seem to unfold and flow almost of their own accord.This book starts to develop the wonderful meerkat characters a lot more especially Henratty Mortimer and Jack Brian, the reader begins to see their competitive nature as they are so alike but do not realise it, whereas the two younger siblings, Lyndi Lou Mortimer and Oscar Brian are the quieter, more focused siblings whom have the same interests and really get on. Henratty and Jack are like two little detectives and love to solve a mystery, especially Jack and no matter the danger Jack has no fear as he loves an adventure. This book shows how clever these two meerkat characters can be when they try to solve this mystery which involves saving the life of Misha Mortimer, Henratty's eldest sister from the evil monster lurking in the woods. The story is depicted by 27 stunning and vivid colour illustrations. The author would love her books to be made into animation as she has many other wonderful animal characters and not just the meerkats that can be found in the third and fourth series of the books and the author has already written four poem picture books based on the other animal characters to publish, such as Poppy The Most Beautiful Worm and Enoch and Escargot's Snail Trail.
