El manuscrito original de su autobiografía Discurso de mi vida se encuentra en la Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid. El manuscrito fue descubierto en 1900. Se han hecho varias ediciones con prólogos y comentarios de diversos autores. El estilo de su escrito, como afirma el propio autor, va seco y sin llover y, sin embargo, es este el principal aliciente de su narración, que es muy ágil, movida e interesante por cualquier concepto, desde el sociológico al histórico y psicológico.

El estilo de la obra, como afirma el propio autor, «anda seco y sin llover», y sin embargo es este el principal aliciente de su narración, que es muy vívida, movida e interesante, no falta de sentido del humor. Lejos de limitarse a consignar aquellos hechos que podían redundar en gloria suya, con el mayor desparpajo Contreras se presenta el a sí mismo como pendenciero, tahúr y lujurioso. Narra sus expediciones por Levante, su vida de soldado en España, Flandes y el Mediterráneo, su viaje a las Antillas, sus amores y pendencias; todo sazonado con ligeras digresiones acerca de sucesos o personas de su época que dan no poca animación al libro.
