The two texts: ESPANA, LA PRIMERA HISPANIDAD and HISPANIDADES: LATINOAMERICA Y LOS EE. UU. draw on the film series by Carlos Fuentes, EL ESPEJO ENTERRADO, a unique documentary co-produced by SOGETEL (Spain) in collaboration with the SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION.

In order to enter advanced study of Spanish language and Hispanic literature, students need a fundamental knowledge of the geography, history and culture of the Spanish-speaking peoples. HISPANIDADES is intended to serve as a resource to provide this background while preserving instructors flexibility to shape their own courses. Chapter themes relate to video segments from the Fuentes documentary, now available for the first time in DVD format. 
Each of the two texts includes a DVD containing related excerpts from the original series. The DVD menu allows the student immediate access to the appropriate video segment.

This Study Guide is the updated replacement for the "Workbook to accompany El Espejo Enterrado" by the same authors originally published by McGraw-Hill.
The series of five programs takes you on a fascinating journey through five hundred years of Spanish and Latin American history. Each one-hour program contains a number of short units (called unidades) lasting from four to eight minutes and dealing with a specific topic. The divisions into units is a creation of the authors and not indicated on film. 
Often, study of the rich and varied culture of the Spanish-speaking world becomes separated from the study of the Spanish language. When accompanied by this Study Guide, the video series provides students with the opportunity to expand their knowledge of Spanish while simultaneously learning a great deal about Hispanic culture, beautifully presented on film with accompanying commentary by Carlos Fuentes. 
This workbook is intended to facilitate an understanding of Fuentes commentary and the nature of the issues he discusses. Students will find that preparing themselves for each unit by reading carefully the summary (resumen) and studying the vocabulary and phrases as well as thinking about the issues (ideas para pensar) before viewing the video itself will make Fuentes commentary much easier to understand.

This Study Guide is the companion to the English language version of the 5-DVD video series THE BURIED MIRROR, written and narrated by the famous Mexican writer and social commentator, Carlos Fuentes. 
This Study Guide uses the English narrative of THE BURIED MIRROR video series (Carlos Fuentes), to give students practice in writing clearly and effectively. Most activities involve replies which test student comprehension as well. A reply thus requires understanding the question and the reference in the film narrative. Some activities may need only a sentence or two for an adequate reply. Others will specifically ask students to write a paragraph. All activities will test student ability to write sentences employing correct grammar. 
This guide emphasizes narrative writing: how to write effective sentences, paragraphs and even entire essays. Each program begins with a writing emphasis on a specific topic:

Alternately, instructors of Hispanic Culture and Civilization will find that the film series, transcript and Study Guide provide excellent source material for teaching about Spain and Latin America. Students with limited (or no) knowledge of the Spanish language will thus have access to the unique content of THE BURIED MIRROR.
Finally, because the film series ends its coverage in 1992 and many important changes have taken place since then, a special section will provide a guide to students to write their own summary of that period, both for Spain and Latin America.
