Merwin, United States Poet Laureate In August of 2013, photographer Daniel Sullivan set out to find what was left of the Kings Highway. Carrying his camera equipment, a small solar panel and lots of water, he hiked, climbed and crawled along the coast, reaching the depths of the ancient kings highway. What he has photographed is a side of Maui and Hawaii never before seen-ancient stone temples crumbling in the jungle, hidden waterfalls, and a disappearing road. Everybody loves the island of Maui. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world and the sheer fanaticism about the island is well documented. Yet, for all the magazine articles and television shows about it, there has never been a fine art photography book or exhibit, which captures the essence of the beauty, history and landscape of the island. The Maui Coast: Legacy of the Kings Highway aims to fill this and to inspire the viewer to not only appreciate the beauty of Maui, but also work toward preserving a piece of history. Not only has there never been a book written about the ancient kings highway, no one living actually knew the location of the road which lies hidden in jungles, across lava fields and along the coast. The only map in existence on the road is in a 19th century survey made by the Kingdom of Hawaii.</p>

<p>In 2010, Daniel Sullivan made his way to Ethiopia's Omo Valley to visit ancient tribes who, in a world of constant change and globalization, have managed to remain untouched. His journey marked the beginning of a project that he hopes to share with the world wide community. Through the evocative images he captured on his expedition, he tells the story of the tribes-their spirit, their beauty and their dependance on the Omo River-bringing the reader closer to these people before they are devastated by one of greatest ecocides of our time. The Ethiopian government is constructing a massive dam along the Omo River, forcing the tribes into a struggle for their very existence. In the Tribes of the Omo Valley, Sullivan uses the universal language of photography to give a voice to these endangered individuals, generating an awareness of the pending ecocide and a call to action to save these awe-inspiring people. Fifteen distinctly different tribes have called the Omo Valley home since the beginning of humanity. They decorate their bodies with clay from the river, ash, animal skins, feathers, horns, shells, beads and flowers. Many of the tribes still remain naked with only women wearing a simple animal skin loincloth. Each tribe s customs are different. Men who have killed many in battle decorate their bodies with deep patterns of scars across their chest, arms and torso, signifying that they are a warrior. When a Mursi girl reaches puberty, a small incision is cut into her bottom lip into which is inserted a small clay plate as a symbol of beauty. As she gets older, the plate is stretched. The Kara, who take great pride in their ability as painters, mimic the many patterns of nature, never repeating the same designs. These diversities in dress and ornamentation are what make them so unique and fascinating. For hundreds of thousands of years the tribes of the Omo Valley have lived in virtual isolation, without reliance upon or contact to the outside world. It is one of the last remaining untouched places on our over populated planet. Until fairly recently, tribes still fought with spears, killing few through the natural balance of tribal warfare and peace. Today, as a result of an influx of Kalashnikovs and the ivory trade, that balance has shifted and more are being killed. Due to Ethiopia s distinction as being the only African country never to be colonized, the tribes were never influenced by the European powers that changed so much of the rest of Africa. It is here an ancient Africa has survived.</p>
