Thinking through early twentieth-century cartoons, the kaleidoscopic drawings of Saul Steinberg, the film Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and other children's entertainment, Puddle, Pothole, Portal explores the coexistence of disparate elements within shared spaces. Gags betray complex meanings and sociopolitical satire, and unrelated objects, locales and avatars interact in the same dimension. As screens, passageways and shadows populate both physical and virtual realms, we question whether they are reflections or traces of the objective world, obstructions, fantasies or entryways into other realms. How artists have examined the legacies of American-led military engagement in Iraq
The 1991 Gulf War marked the start of a lengthy period of American-led military involvement in Iraq that led to more than a decade of sanctions, the 2003 Iraq War, and ongoing repercussions throughout the region. Though the Iraq War officially ended in 2011, artists have continued to examine these conflicts and their impacts. Theater of Operations: The Gulf Wars 1991–2011 charts the effects of these wars on cultural production in Iraq and throughout its diasporas, as well as responses to the wars in the West, revealing how this period was defined by unsettling intersections of spectacularized violence and new imperialisms. The exhibition features more than 80 artists and collectives, including Afifa Aleiby, Dia al-Azzawi, Thuraya al-Baqsami, Paul Chan, Harun Farocki, Guerrilla Girls, Thomas Hirschhorn, Hiwa K, Hanaa Malallah, Monira Al Qadiri, Nuha al-Radi and Ala Younis. This catalog features newly commissioned essays by Zainab Bahrani, Rijin Sahakian, Nada Shabout and McKenzie Wark alongside texts by exhibition co-curators Peter Eleey and Ruba Katrib. Excerpts from period journals by artist Nuha Al-Radi and anonymous blogger Riverbend detail life in Iraq over two decades of war, sanctions and occupation. Reprinted essays from Jean Baudrillard and Serge Daney provide additional context, delving into the effects of the conflict upon media and visual culture.

The writings of one of the greatest film critics of his generation on the auteur approach of the French New Wave to a more structural examination of film.\nOne of the greatest film critics of his generation, Serge Daney wrote for Cahiers du Cinéma before becoming a journalist for the daily newspaper Libération. The writings collected in this volume reflect Daney’s evolving interests, from the auteur approach of the French New Wave to a more structural examination of film, psychoanalysis, and popular culture. Openly gay throughout his lifetime, Daney rarely wrote explicitly about homosexuality but his writings reflect a queer sensibility that would influence future generations. In regular intellectual exchanges with Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari, and Roland Barthes, Daney wrote about cinema autobiographically, while lyrically analyzing the transition from modern cinema to postmodern media. A noted polymath, Daney also published books about tennis and Haiti’s notorious Duvalier regime. His criticism is open and challenging, polyvocal and compulsively readable.

The Footlights (1983) was the first book by Serge Daney, a film critic admired in his lifetime by Gilles Deleuze and Jean-Luc Godard and recognized since his premature death in 1992 as the most important French writer on film after André Bazin. The Footlights stands apart in Daney's body of work as the only collection of his essays he conceived of as a book, organizing his seminal pieces from Cahiers du Cinéma by theme and linking them with original texts that reflect in a personal voice on the doubts, battles, and illuminations of a generation of film lovers inspired by the explorations of Lacanian theory and roused by the collective aspirations of Maoist dogma. In pieces on fellow travelers Godard and Straub/Huillet, on films ranging from Pasolini's Saló to Spielberg's Jaws, and on the difference between film language and television discourse, Daney offers a definitive portrait of an era of radical hope and disappointment.

Primeira obra do crítico francês Serge Daney (1944-1992) publicada no Brasil, A rampa foi organizado pelo próprio autor e reúne artigos escritos nos anos 1970-1982 para a revista Cahiers du cinéma, da qual Daney foi um dos diretores. O crítico foi o principal responsável por reconduzir os Cahiers para o campo da análise cinematográfica, após fase radical de orientação maoísta, de 1968 a 1972, quando a tradicional revista na qual colaboraram Godard, Truffaut, Rohmer, Rivette e tantos outros passou a tratar sobretudo de política. Os ensaios do volume pontuam claramente esse "retorno" e um enfoque menos ingênuo sobre o poder transformador da linguagem de cinema, o que se torna ainda mais claro nas introduções às diversas seções, acréscimos importantes às análises selecionadas das páginas dos Cahiers. A rampa - título que alude ao espaço arquitetônico da "ribalta" nos antigos teatros convertidos em cinemas - constitui uma espécie de "canteiro de obras teórico", como assinala o prefácio escrito especialmente para a edição brasileira pelo atual diretor da revista Cahiers, Jean-Michel Frodon. Serge Toubiana, diretor da Cinemateca Francesa, também escreveu prefácio especial para esta edição. Os textos exibem fortes marcas de pensadores importantes da época, aliando a análise cinematográfica a conceitos emprestados de Jacques Lacan, Louis Althusser, Roland Barthes e Gilles Deleuze.
