Genealogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the Families of the State of Massachusetts; Volume 1

The 1913 edition of Cutter's New England Families is one of the richest compendia of family histories in all of New England genealogy. Compiled by William R. Cutter, the former corresponding secretary and historian of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, this four-volume work boasts detailed genealogical and biographical essays on nearly 1,000 venerable New England families. Out of print and hard to locate for many years since its original publication in 1913, New England Families, Genealogical and Memorial is now available from Clearfield Company in an affordable paper edition.   In terms of content and arrangement, this publication is reminiscent of others common to the early twentieth century. Each essay begins with an explanation of the derivation or local origin of the principal surname under discussion. The family history is then traced forward from the oldest known ancestor of the line--in many instances from 16th-century England--to the family member (living or memorialized) featured in the essay. A lengthy biography of that individual, oftentimes accompanied by a photograph, comes next. This is followed, frequently, by additional, collateral lines linked to the subject of the essay. On the whole, the essays cover the length and breadth of New England ancestry from the colonial period through the early twentieth century, and they also serve to illustrate the influence of New England settlement upon the states to the west. It should be noted that, while the essays brim with Mayflower connections and ties to the early Puritan settlers of the region, this collection is a totally unique assemblage of New England families. The name index found at the back of the final volume identifies some 8,000 principal descendants of the main families treated.

Between 1913 and 1916, William Richard Cutter published four separate 4-volume series entitled New England Families, Genealogical and Memorial. The First Series, published in 1913 and just reprinted by Clearfield Company in 1994 to an enthusiastic audience, featured genealogical and biographical essays on nearly 1,000 New England families. The Third Series (1915) is comprised of nearly 1,000 additional New England genealogical and biographical essays not found in the First Series and promises to enable New England researchers to investigate 1,000 additional lineages and nearly 10,000 New England ancestors unique to it. Each genealogical sketch offers a derivation or origin for the surname of that essay. The family history is traced forward from the oldest known ancestor of the line to the family member (living or memorialized) featured in the sketch, for whom, in turn, a biography--often with photograph--is provided. This is followed, frequently, by additional, collateral lines linked to the subject of the essay. A stronghold of Scotch-Irish settlement, Augusta County commands great interest among genealogists because thousands of 18th- and 19th-century families passed through it en route to the West. J. Lewis Peyton's History of Augusta County, Virginia is the standard work on the county. It is essentially a narrative account of Augusta from its aboriginal beginnings and Spotswood's discovery of the Valley of Virginia through the Civil War. Genealogists will value the book, in part, as a companion volume to such Augusta County source record collections as Lyman Chalkley's Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia. Of greater importance to genealogists, however, are the genealogical and biographical sketches of a number pioneering Augusta County families found in the Appendix to the volume.

He married, at Taunton, Massachusetts, July 24, 1712, Mary Briggs, of an old colonial family. He settled in that part of Taunton now the town of Norton, Massachusetts, and was in all likelihood the progenitor of all the families of this name dating back to the eighteenth century in Massachusetts. Children, born at Norton: Rebecca, February 24, 1712; Abigail, October 1, 1714; Mary, May 17, 1717; Elizabeth, March 13, 1718-19; Silence, March 14, 1719-20; John, April 17, 1722, removed to Stoughton where he married, July 1, 1749, Sarah Welman of Norton; and (second) August 8, 1759, Mrs. Joanna Perry, at Stoughton; Isaiah, February 7, 1723-24, settled at Stoughtonham (Sharon), Massachusetts; Samuel, mentioned below; Ebenezer, about 1727, died at Foxborough, September 27, 1804; George (?) married at Stoughtingham (intention January 6, 1755, at Stoughton). John Forrest, of Sheffield, Ebenezer Forrest of Mansfield, Ebenezer Forrest of Wrentham, and David Forrest of Stoughton, were soldiers of the Revolution. Spencer Forrest settled in Halifax. (II) Samuel Forrest, son of John Forrest, was born in Norton or vicinity, 1725-6, and died at Foxboro, Massachusetts, in 1805. He was a soldier in the French and Indian war from Norton, and went to the siege of Louisburg under Major Joseph Hodges, giving his age at enlistment in 1745 as nineteen years. He married, at Norton, October 29, 1747, Mary Skinner, who died his widow November 15, 1824. The gravestones of both are standing in the old burying ground there.
