A summary of the mechanisms for phosphate monoester hydrolysis, first examining the manners in which this hydrolysis is catalyzed by simple model complexes. Subsequently, the six well-characterized classes of enzymes which catalyze phosphate monoester hydrolysis phosphatases are examined in detail: serine/threonine phosphatases, purple acid phosphatases, low molecular weight acid phosphatases, and high molecular weight phosphatases.
