Happy to report that the book lives up to the hype. Although I found the opening a tad slow, the fun soon kicks in as Trotter and Looney head to the races, perhaps for the last time? If you are looking for lyrical writing or something literary in terms of writing style, forget it. Cronley barely gives you descriptions of the two main characters (his descriptions of Miss Backstretch however are hilarious and very vivid). This creates an 'everyman' type of deal where these two hopeless punters could be any one of hundreds or thousands who frequent the track.
