This book provides ideas for parents who want to teach their child about God but who want to do so consistently with the modern world and the discoveries of science. A central theme of Teaching Your Child about God is that “there are other ways to conceive of God besides the anthropomorphic being we learned about as children. Chapters in Teaching Your Child about God discuss survey data showing what children around the world believe about God. Other chapters address what Correia calls “thinking lessons,” by which he means the rational side of religion, “loving lessons,” by which he means the relationship between loving God and loving others, and “feeling lessons,” the relationship between God and self-acceptance. Other chapters discuss the role of God in moral development, the role of prayer in a scientific world, and the special problems of children who have become addicted to drugs or alcohol. The book concludes with an Appendix that describes the major religions of the world in a clear, objective and readable way. Correia argues that such a reference guide can be helpful because: “Knowing the basics of what others believe helps us bridge the gap of misunderstanding that can create barriers between groups.”
