Enlightened Teaching: Elevating Through Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is an educational philosophy that incorporates mindfulness in the school setting. Enlightened Teaching follows the ideas of Dr. Shefali Tsabary presented in her book The Conscious Parent in an effort to awaken the consciousness of individuals who work with students. Instrumental in developing mindful is the recognition that many students are suffering from emotional wounds. As laid out by Dr. Joseph Hendershott in his book Reaching the Wounded Student emotional wounds prohibit students from reaching their true potential. Enlightened Teaching has established Noble Truths in Teaching and a path that leads to enlightenment in teaching. This path includes mindfulness, understanding, compassion, discipline, and guidance. The philosophy integrates the theories of Dr. Abraham Maslow, Dr. Erik Erikson, Dr. Benjamin Bloom, Dr. Jean Piaget, and Dr. Howard Gardner commonly taught in teacher preparation programs and applies them in a practical, cohesive way. Theories are applied to help teachers become mindful of themselves and their students to help students reach self-actualization and teachers transcendence by recognizing the spiritual side of all.

The summer after their junior year began the same as the summer before their junior year—GUN VIOLENCE! Every time they feel they are getting a grip on life, something happens that INTERRUPTS their stability and threatens their mental health. Stockard lives with and manages anxiety and depression. However, her mental health is just one of the many challenges she deals with during her junior year in high school. Learning to open herself a romantic relationship is another challenge she faces. Chris, Eastridge High School’s star cornerback, has learned to mask the many secrets he carries as a football star. The stress of trying to maintain his image, however, becomes too much to bear. How will he navigate his life through his junior year to secure the college scholarship he has always dreamed of? Stockard and Chris join forces with other friends to face the challenges brought on gun violence and mental health. The death of a friend the summer before their junior year; the February 14, 2018 school massacre in Parkland, Florida; and the shooting death of another friend the summer after their junior year make them question their mortality and laws that govern human rights. They are ignited to change things in their community through the March for Our Lives Movement and the deaths of their friends.
