<p>"In ?la Comes of Age, Comfort Nwabara exploits the valueof her doctoral training in Family Ecology Theory in creating ?la's story. Shefocuses on the relationships between humans with one another and within theirnatural and built environments. In all their daily activities, including pursuit ofwealth, setting of values, life-styles, creativity, and use of resources and making ofwaste, humans relate with one another spatially and temporally through the social,economic and political structures they have put in place. They employ their minds to find the bestmeans for living, procreating and enduring, because they understand that the interest and survival ofthe group must necessarily take precedence over individual interests and ambitions and that tried andadopted values must be preserved at all costs. Towards maintaining peace, they set boundaries andobligations and rules and guidelines for all, what some minds have termed 'inputs.' Inputs result into'actions.' Eventually, actions lead to 'outputs' or 'outcomes,' ranging from possessions that accrue toindividuals and family units to services they expect from kith and kin, meaning, obligations due to them.In other words, they may enjoy independence and autonomy, but are also bound by obligations,boundaries and orders from the group. That is the thesis of ?la Comes of Age in which the authorpassionately affirms and defends deserving Igbo traditional values, even as she eulogizes theenvironment and time in that captivating literary nonfiction in a first-person narrative form andbiographical writing style and tone. The authorial double vision obligates attention to the natural andsupernatural elements and the thought processes and behaviors of the people in their geographicalspace and time period. Noteworthy is the constant and repeated reference to the historical past in suchexpressions as, "at that time," "in their time," "in those days," etc. All the human activities in ?la'sstory mirror ancestral roots and the beliefs and worldviews of the Igbo people, turning the author'sunique art of storytelling of a young girl's socialization from infanthood into adulthood into a yearningfor the restoration, regeneration and reintegration of Igbo traditional values andepistemologies."</p>
