Cohen has replaced the epilogue for the third edition, which appeared in 1989 just after Tiananmen square, and added a chapter summarizing US policy towards China over the following decade. He has also revised earlier chapters to reflect new understandings of events in the 1970s and 1980s. The first edition was published in 1971.
