Ten of the twelve homilies of St. John Chrysostom presented here were delivered at Antioch over a period of several years beginning in A.D. 386. The final two homilies were delivered in 398 after Chrysostom became patriarch of Constantinople.
All but one of the homilies aim at refuting the Anomoeans, heretics who revived the most radical tenets of Arius and blatantly claimed that man knows God in the very same way that God knows himself. Chrysostom's refutations and instructions to the faithful are based on the Scriptures rather than on human reasoning. He departed from this series of refutations only in the sixth homily, which he delivered on December 20, 386, again at Antioch. It consists of a panegyric of St. Philogonius, bishop of Antioch ca. A.D. 319-23, who before his episcopal ordination had led a very exemplary life, practiced law and contracted a marriage that was blessed with a daughter.
 In addition to their theological content, these homilies contain many other points of interest. On one occasion, people applauded the speaker and were very attentive to the homily but then left the church so that when Christ is about to appear in the holy mysteries the church becomes empty (Hom III.32; Hom VII.2). During another homily, pickpockets plied their trade so that Chrysostom urged "let no one come into the church carrying money" (Hom IV.46). Chrysostom also indicates that people kept talking to one another at the sacred moment when Christ becomes present (Hom IV.36). He also mentions that chariot races often proved more enticing than going to church (Hom VII.1). Finally, valuable information on fourth-century Eastern liturgies is found in Hom III.41, 42, and Hom IV.32.

In all places and in all societies, piety—or godliness—produces, advances, and establishes order, peace, safety, prosperity, all that is good, all that is lovely and agreeable, and all that is convenient and pleasant for human society and ordinary life. Piety is the special interest of all who are involved in governing and education. Piety is their greatest wisdom and policy; it will both preserve their outward state here in this world, and it will satisfy their consciences and save their souls. All the Machiavellian arts and tricks amount to nothing in comparison to this one plain and easy way of securing and furthering the interests of men. Piety is not moved to needless change. Piety cherishes worth and encourages industry, whereupon virtue flourishes and wealth is increased and, as a result, the occasions and means of disorder are stopped and the pretences for sedition and faction are cut off. If every governor would have the people honest and diligent, if every parent would have his children obliging and grateful, if every man would have his friend faithful and kind, if we would have others act in a just and sincere manner, then we must each strive to further piety from which all good dispositions and practices proceed. Piety is a fence protecting each individual—rendering each man civil, condescending, kind, and helpful to others. Piety is the only and right ballast of society.

St. John Chrysostom (347 - 407), was one of the most important Early Church Fathers, who served first as priest in Antioch and then as Archbishop of Constantinople. He is known for his sharp preaching, and his denunciation of the moral shortcomings of authority in the church and the state, which ultimate led to his untimely death. He is also famous for the Liturgy used by the Eastern Orthodox church in almost every service, which bears his name: the Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom. His epithet Chrysostom means "golden-mouthed" in Greek and denotes his famous eloquence for which people would flock to hear him. Chrysostom was an extremely prolific author, exceeded only by St. Augustine of Hippo in the quantity of his surviving writings. He is held in great honor as a saint in the Orthodox and Catholic world. The Eastern Orthodox church regards him as one of the Three Holy Hierarchs (alongside Basil the Great and Gregory of Nazianzus). As such it is fascinating to hear the great master of preaching expound upon marriage and family life, a particularly controversial subject as the roles of men and women having been changing in modern society. 
The four homilies presented here are expositions on the following scriptures: 1) 1 Cor. vii. 1 - 36, 2) Ephesians v. 22-35, 3) Ephesians vi. 1-4, and 4) Colossians 3:18-25.

John Chrysostom (347 - 407), is considered by many to be the greatest preacher of the East. Born in 4th-century Antioch, he became quite pious, studying theology as a youth and then retiring to the wilderness as a hermit, until his extreme asceticism required him to return to Antioch. There he was ordained a priest, and became famous for his sermons, particularly on the Bible. These homilies on the Gospel of St. Matthew were thought to be delivered during this time period, when Antioch was part of the Byzantine empire. In 397 John Chrysostom would go on to become the archbishop of Constantinople. He remained at that post until his fiery preaching ran afoul of the empress Eudoxia and he was exiled to his untimely death in 407. The text for this book is drawn from the larger work, "Saint Chrysostom: homilies on the Gospel of Saint Matthew, by St. John Chrysostom (d. 407), translated by Philip Schaff (1819-1893), New York: Christian Literature Co., 1888." To this text have been added illustrations of the various Gospel events referred to.

John Chrysostom is regarded as a saint both in the Catholic Western church and in the East where he is one of the Three Holy Hierarchs (along with Basil the Great and Gregory of Nazianzus). He would later go on to become the archbishop of Constantinople. However, when his sermons were ill-received by the empress he was marched to his untimely death. In the 4th-century, this set of 15 homilies on Philippians was delivered by the great preacher of Constantinople, St. John Chrysostom (347 - 407 AD). Together these sermons give a complete verse-by-verse commentary of the letter and provide the oldest existing commentary available on Philippians.The epistle to the Philippians was composed by St. Paul, and his fellow-labourer St. Timothy, and is addressed to the Christian church in Philippi, Greece. Paul and Silas visited Philippi during Paul's second missionary journey (around 50 AD), where, according to the Acts of the Apostles, Paul and Silas were charged with disturbing the city. He is known for his preaching and public speaking, his denunciation of abuse of authority by both ecclesiastical and political leaders, the Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom, and his ascetic sensibilities. Other churches of the Western tradition, including some Anglican provinces and some Lutheran churches, also commemorate him on 13 September. However, certain Lutheran churches and Anglican provinces commemorate him on the traditional feast day of 27 January. The Coptic Church also recognizes him as a saint (with feast days on 16 Thout and 17 Hathor).
