Excerpt from Studies in the Life of John WesleyWE know through the admirable labors of Mr. Galton, remarks Charles Darwin, that genius, which implies a wonderfully complex combination of high faculties, tends to be inherited. Perhaps scientific men to-day would not be quite so confident in making this assertion as was Mr. Darwin; but whatever doubt there may be as to the immediate transmission from parent to child of that wonderfully complex combi nation of high qualities which he denominates gen ius, it is quite certain that family traits and tend encies may be developed and handed down from generation to generation, if the process be not counter acted by the introduction through intermarriage of unfavorable strains. The Observation that a man's training ought to begin with his great-grandmother should be so modified as to include both Of his great grandmothers and his great-grandfathers too. Being descended from long lines of cultured and pious an cestors on both the paternal and maternal sides is a matter of no Small import in one's life. This is one of God's ways of bringing into being individuals pos sessed of those rare latent qualities which make it possible for them, under the inﬂuence of the Holy Spirit and by wise nurture and training, to develop into saints and spiritual leaders.
