Based around the diary of crew member Paul Chapman, this book follows the daily dramas of a paramedic accident and emergency ambulance crew in Newcastle as they respond to their 999 calls. It provides an insight into the people who join the paramedics and the medical challenges of the job. It also reveals how they cope emotionally with constant exposure to gruesome events. The book accompanies a BBC television series of the same name.

Talbot House Poperinghe was opened in November 1915 as a 'Soldiers Club' - a haven from hell - by two Chaplains of the 6th Division, Philip 'Tubby' Clayton and Neville Talbot. The house was dedicated to the memory of Gilbert Talbot, Neville's brother, who had been killed in in the afternoon counter-attack (set up to re-take the positions lost in the early morning Liquid Fire attack of the same day) at Hooge on 30 July 1915. For the following three years, except for a short period in 1918, the doors of Talbot House never closed and it became a 'home-from-home' for the officers and men of the British and Imperial armies of the time. Today Talbot House is a living museum offering a friendly greeting and a cup of tea to visitors on their arrival - a house rule established by 'Tubby' Clayton in 1915. Bringing to the reader the history of the house and its contents, the book brings to life the multitude of events that took place in and around it as well as telling the little-known stories of Clayton's frequent trips to the front line to minister to the men in the trenches around Ypres

Poperinghe, better known as ‘Pop’ to the troops of the British Army during the Great War, has its place in history due to the Toc H movement which saw its birth in Talbot House there. This book, the second in Paul Chapman’s trilogy, brings to life the town as the troops knew it, a place of ‘rest’ and entertainment, restaurants and ‘theatres’, Hotels and billets, bars and brothels, a place for officers and men to enjoy when out of the line. Although it suffered its share of bombing and shelling, the town was not unduly damaged and is much the same today as it was then, apart from the natural expansion due to modern industry and population growth. Most of the buildings used for troop entertainment and general activities are still there, carrying the same names, with many of them offering the same services, although of a more 'refined' type. Having read this book, Poperinghe will present a totally different aspect to todays visitor.
