<p>John Chapman's History of Edgefield County is the standard work on its subject, and it meanders its way from the formation of the county, through the Revolution and War of 1812, to the era of Civil War and Reconstruction. While the final 100 pages identify the members of the various Edgefield County units in the Civil War, in some cases touching on their service records or families, most of the volume consists of biographical and genealogical sketches of hundreds of county luminaries (many of them arranged by township).</p>

The Annals of Newberry is a work of enormous magnitude, touching on perhaps 20,000 persons from the time of the colonial settlement through the Revolution, the Civil War, and beyond. Here can be found the names of all who took part in the development of the county, as well as such other matter--biographical, historical, anecdotal--as might properly constitute the annals of Newberry. Settlers and residents, mainly Germans, Irish, Quakers, Baptists, and Presbyterians, from as early as the late 18th century, when Newberry was formed from Ninety-Six District, through the War with Mexico and the Civil War, are identified in a multitude of homespun anecdotes or else discovered fortuitously in isolated documents and lists such as early muster rolls or army dispatches.

This history begins with the Colonial settlement and goes through 1897. Edgefield County was formed in 1785 and from it were formed Saluda county and a portion of Greenwood County. During this time, O Neall recounts many interesting facts and stories about the people and places of Newberry. The second part starts off with a section on some accounts of the most prominent families who migrated from this district to Ohio, and then goes into a biography of the O Neall family. Chapman then sets off to fill in the omissions and also to carry on where O Neall left off, Namely the 1862 session from the Union. The rolls of all companies associated with Newberry during the War between the States and the War with Mexico are listed.
