En este caso Aira piensa sobre la naturaleza del deseo y como este se trenza con la inteligencia, con el mal y con el miedo. Una noche en la pampa, el diablo decide aparecerseles a los indios. Su aparicion, piensa, habra de causar panico. Pero al parecer, como este diablo es otro, muy diferente al que segun el refranero acumula saberes con el tiempo, comete un error de calculo. No ha tomado en cuenta que la noche elegida es de banquete. Los hombres y las mujeres han comido y bebido tanto, se hallan tan ahitos y agotados, que ya no estan para ver nada y menos aun para huir. Apenas si logran verlo los niños que, lejos de aterrarse, lo asumen como un inmenso juguete al que montan alegremente. Por supuesto, el diablo no puede darse por vencido, asi que resiste, insiste y persiste. Se resiste a admitir que su trabajo es futil, persiste en su pretension e insiste con otros planes y apariencias, a pesar de que fracasa en cada intento. Y estos fracasos acumulados, cada vez mas gozosos, hacen que los lectores seamos presas de una curiosidad creciente, ya no en cuanto a ese diablo tan menso y fatuo que casi parece de pastorela, sino respecto a la tribu menos que modesta, cuyas posesiones son apenas caballos para montar, yeguas roba­das para comer y algunos toldos de cuero. A ese pueblo que no construye nada y prefiere no hablar (aunque cuando habla lo hace por horas, ceremoniosamente) y que logra resistir al diablo. Y eso en realidad es lo que nos cuenta esta novela.
