Late in 1863 a young painter named Francis B. Carpenter wished to commemorate the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation. The likable and well-connected Carpenter received President Lincoln’s consent during a visit to the White House. “Well, Mr. Carpenter, we will turn you loose in here,” said Lincoln. The painter set up a studio in the state dining room and worked for months in 1864 under a lighted chandelier. It was a marvelous opportunity to observe the president and converse with him. The Inner Life of Abraham Lincoln is Carpenter’s account of his experience. He watched the daily parade of petitioners who came to Lincoln’s office—worried mothers, desperate job-seekers, needy widows and orphans. He heard Lincoln’s own account of the decision to abolish slavery by proclamation, heard him recite Shakespeare, and heard him say often, “That reminds me of a story. . . .” He dealt with little Tad, gathered anecdotes from insiders, excerpted published reminiscences from former associates like William H. Herndon. He added his own impressions of the president, noting a deep melancholy underneath the famous humor. This book, originally published in 1866, struck a chord with a public hungering for intimate details about the fallen president. Carpenter’s painting, The First Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation before the Cabinet, was finished earlier, displayed in the rotunda of the Capitol before Lincoln’s second inauguration, and then exhibited on a northern tour. Reproductions hung in many homes, offices, and schoolrooms.

Not illustrated. 1866 edition. Excerpt: ...Hon. William P. Fessenden, of Maine; and soon afterward fell asleep. The next morning he went to his office and wrote the nomination. John Hay, the assistant private secretary, had taken it from the President on his way to the Capitol, when he encountered Senator Fessenden upon the threshold of the room. As chairman of the Finance Committee, he also had passed an anxious night, and called thus early to consult with the President, and offer some suggestions. After a few moments' conversation, Mr. Lincoln turned to him with a smile, and said: " I am obliged to you, Fessenden, but the fact is, I have just sent your own name to the Senate for Secretary of the Treasury. Hay had just received the nomination from my hand as you entered." Mr. Fessenden was taken completely by surprise, and, very much agitated, protested his inability to accept the position. The state of his health, he said, if no other consideration, made it impossible. Mr. Lincoln would not accept the refusal as final. He very justly felt that with Mr. Fessenden's experience and known ability at the head of the Finance Committee, his acceptance would go far toward reestablishing a feeling of security. He said to him, very earnestly, " Fessenden, the Lord has not deserted me thus far, and He is not going to now,--you must accept! " They separated, the Senator in great anxiety of mind. Throughout the day, Mr. Lincoln urged almost all who called to go and see Mr. Fessenden, and press upon him the duty of accepting. Among these was a delegation of New York bankers, who, in the name of the banking community, expressed their satisfaction at the nomination. This was especially gratifying to the President; and, in the strongest manner, he entreated them to " see Mr. Fessenden and assure...

Six Months at the White House was written by Francis Bicknell Carpenter after the unexpected popularity of a series of articles published in the New York Independence relating to Abraham Lincoln following his assassination. Carpenter, a Civil War portrait painter, was originally hired to capture President Lincoln in the picture. "First Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation before the Cabinet." During the six months occupied in painting this picture, Carpenter enjoyed constant interaction with the President, as well as the various members of his Cabinet. Lincoln was enthusiastic in helping Carpenter, even letting him use the state dining room as his studio.The incidents given were not in any sense isolated exception to the daily routine of Mr. Lincoln's life. The aim of the author was to portray the man as he was revealed to him, without any attempt at idealization. Carpenter has woven into the book personal reminiscences from various individuals, published and unpublished, which bear intrinsic evidence of the genuineness of the great man, Abraham Lincoln.Written in a spirit of enthusiasm and affection, Six Months at the White House is a simple, matter-of-fact record of daily experience and observation, fragmentary but true, in all essential particulars of life in the White House as observed by Carpenter from February to August, 1864.
