Mai-Thu Perret examines the relentless movement of capitalism as it absorbs and defeats what were once revolutionary forms, focusing on the aestheticization of historical avant-gardes to reflect the changing realities of utopian thinking. Her major ongoing project, "The Crystal Frontier," begun in 1999, comprises fictional diary entries and letters written by a group of disillusioned women exiled in the New Mexico desert, as well as myriad artworks that Perret describes as their "hypothetical products." Born in 1975 in Geneva, where she lives and works, Perret studied at Cambridge University and the Whitney Independent Study Program, New York. This comprehensive artist's book, Perret's first monograph, includes a selection of her writings and a specially designed collage of references. Perret's work has recently been seen at The Renaissance Society in Chicago.

This publication presents an overview of the work of the Swiss artist duo Sabina Lang and Daniel Baumann (L/B), who have been collaborating since 1993 and have regularly exhibited in biennials, museums and art venues around the world. Their work can be described as riding on the edge of art, architecture and design. Designed by the Zurich-based design firm Norm, this volume divides L/B's work into seven thematic groups by chapter: Mobile (containing movable objects, among them the one-room hotel "Everland"), Comfort (inflatable objects), Perfect (modular objects), Surface (sharp-edged paintings), Flat (wall paintings), Space (stage objects) and Field (interventions in the real world). Each thematic chapter is introduced by a noted writer; they include, in order, Marc-Olivier Wahler, Philip Ursprung, Giovanni Carmine, Jacqueline Burckhardt, Diedrich Diederichsen, Gianni Jetzer and Rein Wolfs.

Marco Papa's raw material is drama: When Harlem-born Gene Anthony Ray showed up to audition for the movie Fame, it didn't matter that he lacked training, education and money; raw talent distinguished him from 5000 other dancers and landed him the leading role. Later it was his talent that didn't matter, as Ray floundered in drugs, alcohol and promiscuity until a series of strokes ended his life prematurely. Dancing on the Verge, a portrait in video, installation, collage and oral history, transforms the complex story of Ray's decline into that of a triumphant icon. Like his life, it remains inconclusive. Marco Papa, whose investigations into new and mass media have marked him as one of the most sensitive, arresting artists to emerge from Italy in recent years, calls it "a work about the failure that every one of us fears and about the innate talent that we all think or wish we possess."

Eugenio Carmi, born in Genoa in 1920, calls himself a "manufacturer of images." Others call him one of the most quietly significant forces in twentieth-century Italian art. He studied under Felice Casorati and worked his way up through the graphic art world, which still influences his fine art. From 1958 to 1965, he was responsible for Italsider's corporate image; in 1966 he participated in the Venice Bienniale; in 1973, he created a 25-minute experimental program--completely abstract--for the Rai television network. He may be best known for the illustrations he has created for Umberto Eco's stories, published alongside them in Italy and in many other countries. His geometric compositions and careful but confident use of color make him a bellwether of Italian taste.
