Goethe's lifetime (1749-1832) was a period of extraordinary importance in the history of German printmaking. From a style which had been strongly derivative of French and Dutch prototypes, German printmakers evolved a distinctive approach of their own. Etching remained the principal vehicle of the period but the invention of lithography introduced another medium which was explored with great subtlety by German artists. Over 200 works by nearly 70 artists are described in this illustrated catalogue, showing the great richness and diversity of production and examining the way in which patronage and the print market operated at the time.

A tradition of printmaking has existed among artists from the Scandinavian countries for only 100 years, but during that time it has enjoyed special favour as a means of creative expression. Using etching and woodcut in particular, Scandinavian artists have have used this medium to evoke a wide range of emotions from calm introspection to a sharper melancholia, raw nervous energy and surreal humour. The development of an identifiable "Scandinavian" sensibility has always been fostered by foreign stimuli, and artists such as Carl Larsson, Anders Zorn, Edvard Munch and Asger Jorn have all looked abroad for inspiration. Contemporary printmakers continue to operate within an international context, and artists such as Per Kirkeby from Denmark and Sigurdur Gudmundsson from Iceland move between painting, sculpture, photography and printmaking. This work surveys modern Scandinavian printmaking as a whole, and includes 150 prints by 55 different artists, principally from Norway, Sweden and Denmark, mostly drawn from the British Museum's own collection. This catalogue accompanies an exhibition in the British Museum held from 24 January to 20 April 1997.

A sample of the trees featured include Baobab, Birch, Eucalyptus, Olive, Poplar, Oak, and Cocoa. 200 colour illustrations showcase an incredible range of art and artefacts, from Egyptian wall paintings, to ancient Greek vases and jewellery, Indian temple sculptures, Japanese woodcuts, Indonesian shadow puppets, British watercolours and a twenty-first-century tree of life from Mozambique.

Over 90 oil paintings and prints will explore the breadthand depth of Astrup's unique artistic practice, shining a spotlight on of oneof Norway's most renowned artists of the twentieth century. Frances Carey is an independent curator and consultant whowas formerly Deputy Keeper of Prints and Drawings and Head of NationalProgrammes at the British Museum. She has published on the history of art andculture from the eighteenth century to the present day. Ian A.C. Dejardin isthe Sackler Director of Dulwich Picture Gallery, London. He graduated with aMaster (Hons) in History of Art from Edinburgh University; appointed Curator atDulwich in 1997, he became the gallery's Director in 2005 and since then haspresided over a varied and international exhibition program. MaryAnne Stevensis an independent art historian and curator who has previously worked at theRoyal Academy of Arts, London, as Director of Academic Affairs, before servingas Acting Secretary for three years. She has been published extensively, andcurated or co-curated many major international exhibitions, including Manet:Portraying Life and Jean-Etienne Liotard.
