It sheds much light on an area of considerable aeronautical achievement, which has until now been unjustly neglected. German progress in this field has been overshadowed by developments in other areas. Yet by the end of World War II, despite minimal funding, lukewarm official support and bitter inter-service rivalries, the Germans were, undoubtedly, technologically way ahead of their American counterparts in the development of rotating wing aircraft. Following World War II France made determined efforts to catch-up with other countries in developing high-performance aircraft and designed successful machines to fulfill the needs of the Armée de l'Air, the Marine Nationale and compete in export markets.
For the next twenty years they were the only aircraft manufacturers to investigate with equal effort, turbojet, ramjet and rocket propulsion for manned fighters, either taking advantage of German 'war-booty' technology or using national pre-war research. 
A few, such as the Leduc and Griffon ramjet-powered fighters, reached prototype form, the Trident rocket-interceptor advanced to the experimental series (pre-production) stage and the Ouragan, Mystère, Super-Mystère, Mirage III and Etendard were produced in quantity and went on to win export orders.
Later, when the turbojet had won the race for the optimal propulsion system, many attempts were made to design variable-geometry aircraft (including the Mirage G series) and VTOL types (the SNECMA Coléoptère and Dassault Mirage IIIV), and there were even a few flying boat interceptor studies.
In the late sixties, in the pursuit of ever-higher speeds, Nord Aviation, Sud Aviation and primarily Avions Marcel Dassault also produced many Mach 3+ proposals.
Period drawings, promotional art, photographs of prototype aircraft, mock-ups, wind tunnel and promotional models are all combined to present, for the first time in the English language, a complete view of French military aircraft design from the Liberation of France to the late twentieth-century.

In 1963, Eugen Sanger, became head of the Eurospace organization which promoted the 'AeroSpace Transporter'. In response to a Eurospace call, aircraft makers in France, Germany and UK designed recoverable, winged spacecraft. From 1964 to 1970 the French government led studies to evaluate the feasibility of the concept.Those studies, under the leadership of the French Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES), coalesced into the Hermes spaceplane which was then adopted by the European Space Agency. In parallel, Germany and UK proposed fully recoverable designs while other countries, including Japan, India and Russia came to CNES to share ideas about spaceplane design. Unfortunately Hermes was never launched and by 1994 was abandoned after many alternative propositions were discussed.This book relates the story of these remarkable concepts, crossovers between aircraft and spacecraft beginning with the 'antipodal bomber' of 1944 and continuing to Aerospatiale STS-2000 project through the Transporteur Aero-Spatial, VERAS, AW Pyramid, Bumerang, Sanger II, HOTOL, Hermes, and Taranis. Non-European projects like Dyna-Soar, Hyperplane, HOPE, and MAKS are also covered. It provides a fascinating and detailed account of these projects which, being halfway between aircraft and spacecraft, have often been neglected by aviation writers and historians. 
 About the Author 
Jean-Christophe Carbonel was born in 1959 and wrote his first modelling article in 1977. Since then, he has pursued a writing career specializing in model kit history and in the history of aviation projects, prototypes, and early experimenters. Jean-Christophe has more recently specialized in French designs of all eras. Writing for various magazines on both sides of the Channel, French Secret Projects is his first solo book for a British publisher.
