He had survived the horrors of the Spanish Civil War, a 600km half-starved trek and imprisonment in a Fascist labour camp. He had been born into a poor peasant family in Extremadura, Spain in 1916. He never received any formal education. When Fascist rebel troops suddenly invaded Spain in July 1936, the war caught him entirely by surprise in the ancient city of Badajoz. It was only by a miracle that he escaped the atrocities and massacre there. He sought refuge with the Republicans, and joined them in the people's struggle to defend the Spanish government. He fought in many famous battles, and began to learn how to read and write while in the trenches. Soon he began to understand the political complexities of his country that were the causes of injustices, brutal repression and abject poverty. He had entered the war as an illiterate labourer and emerged enlightened, frustrated and indignant. Memory of the Spanish Civil War still brings back the tragic horrors of the human butchery which the author has witnessed. He was persuaded by his family to write about his experiences.
