This edition adheres to the original text, leaving out as little as possible. . An important source of Burton's thoughts, this book also reveals the values and perceptions of Isabel herself. In reading it, one may presume her correct in stating that while others would lay down what he "wrote and said", she in turn would be the only one who could write down what he "thought and did".

Lady Isabel Burton (1831-96) was a distinguished nineteenth-century traveller, writer and critic. She and her husband Richard explored the Middle East, India, Africa and South America extensively during his diplomatic placements and for their own pleasure.
