While this book is concerned with psychology let no reader believe that after studying it he or she will be a budding psychologist. Only those elements of psychology which are central to the adequate functioning of the professional in the health and allied caring services are covered. Many popular topics, such as intelligence, memory, concept formation, will not be found within the covers of this book. The objective of this book is to enable those professionals who have responsibility for the well-being, health and care of others to develop insight into and to become more empathetic to the needs, motivations, feelings and behaviour of their charges. An ancillary objective is that the readers too might come to understand a little more about their own behaviour, particularly in relation to their work situation. Patients in hospital, children in residential care, the elderly in the old folks' home are all perceiving and thinking organisms, not merely interesting medical cases, a classical set of symptoms, a collection of statistics or a bulging case file. Every person, whether professional or client, is affected by the way others respond to them, by the feelings each has for the other, by the non-verbal signals of eye contact, smile, and voice tone, etc.

Essential Psychology

This book has been written to meet several needs. Firstly there is a need for a book which integrates statistics, research design, ex periments and report writing so that none is learned in a vacuum, as commonly is the case, isolated from the others. The aim is to make the student an active learner encouraged to carry out experiments, so ex periencing and understanding the design problems and statistical analyses in the practical context where he can see exactly what he is doing and why. The aim is that by the end of the book, the student should be able to evaluate the research of others, to define a problem, formulate a hypothesis about it, design and carry out the experiment, apply the correct statistics, discuss the results and implications, and write it all up in a logical and sensible fashion. The principle is that old pedagogic one of learning by doing. Secondly, there is a need for an introductory text on statistics, research design and experimental work for the many students who meet psychology and social science for the first time. The initiate in behavioural science needs to gain a conceptual understanding of statistical procedures and design techniques in order to carry out his own investigations and to understand and evaluate constructively the investigations of others. However, experience has shown us that many students (and even some fellow teachers) are somewhat reluctant to study this area as they believe it is difficult and involves mathematics.

The last few years have seen a growth in the number of psychology courses which are being offered as single subject or combined studies options in universities, polytechnics and colleges of higher education. More recently, there has been a marked increase in the number of students in schools and colleges of further education taking 'A' level, '0' level and 'Ala' level psychology examinations. In discussing psychology and psychotherapy with students in both formal and informal settings, it has become obvious to me that many professionals and trainees in health, social service and education spheres often have misinformed, erroneous and often biased views of the aims, objectives and techniques involved in counselling and psychotherapy. There is a proliferation of therapies, some old, some new, which produce a confusing kaleidoscope of treatments on offer to a bewildered public. The purpose of this text is to present in a relatively brief, objective form various current theories and practices in counselling or psychotherapy. This is difficult to do because brevity can itself bring about misunder­ standing, misrepresentation or biased perception. The writer hopes that such has not occurred. The text surveys the bewildering range of therapies available within and outside the Health, Social and Educational Services, to enable intelligent professionals in those services to be more aware of and sensitive to the treatments their clients are undergoing, may undergo or have undergone. Accounts of psychotherapeutic help are often buried in recondite journals, usually inaccessible to doctors, nurses, paramedics, social workers and teachers functioning at 'the coal face'. Few articles ever attempt a comprehensive surveyor rapprochement; most simply argue for one therapy in a biased promotion.
