This monumental collection of correspondence between Gertrude Stein and critic, novelist, and photographer Carl Van Vechten provides crucial insight into Stein's life, art, and artistic milieu as well as Van Vechten's support of major cultural projects, such as the Harlem Renaissance. A Handbook for Supplementary Aids and Services will be useful to regular and special education teachers, related service providers (e.g., speech and language, physical and occupational therapy, etc.), school personnel, psychologists, IEP team members, and parents in the development, implementation and review of individualized education programs (IEPs). Public law 105-17 (the IDEA amendments of 1997) has reemphasized the importance of participation in the regular classroom and in the general curriculum. In order to maximize the participation of children with disabilities with children who are not disabled, Supplementary Aids and Services are now a required element of a child’s IEP. Of the three services which must be specified in every child’s IEP (special education related services and Supplemen-tary Aids and Services), Supplementary Aids and Services are the least defined. Nonetheless, Supplementary Aids and Services are the key to mainstreaming and inclusion and provide the basic test when determining "the maximum extent appropriate" a child with a disability can be educated with children who are not disabled. This book attempts to fulfill this need by providing guidance based on best practice, the law and current research concerning the meaning and implementation of Supplementary Aids and Services. The book is composed of ten chapters. The first three chapters deal with the need to provide a free appropriate public education (FAPE), the various services required by IDEA, and the importance of regular classroom placements. Chapters Four, Five and Six detail the full range of Supplementary Aids and Services, the continuum of alternative placements that must be provided by schools, and methods for providing the least restrictive environment (LRE) requirement. Chapter Seven presents methods for including Supplementary Aids and Services in a child’s IEP and related matters concerning IEP documentation. Chapters Eight and Nine describe direct and indirect teaching services that will enable a child with a disability to participate in the regular classroom. Chapter Ten focuses on assistive technology services, devices and aids that can be used in conjunction with special education, related services and Supplementary Aids and Services to enable successful regular classroom participation.

In order to achieve successful regular classroom participation for children with disabilities with supplementary aids and services, consultant teacher services are essential. This book is intended for special education teachers and other professionals providing special education services with information, guidelines and suggestions relating to the role and responsibilities of the special education consultant teacher. Every state must provide a continuum of alternative placements (e.g. regular classroom, resource room, self-contained setting), but the focus of this guide is participation in the regular classroom and/or regular curriculum 'to enable children with disabilities to be educated with nondisabled children to the maximum extent appropriate.' The many suggestions provided should prove useful concerning what the special education consultant teacher can and should do to enable children with disabilities to be educated with nondisabled children. The book is comprised of seven parts as follows: (1) basic consultant teacher responsibilities and regulatory concerns; (2) planning, individualized planning and IEP consultant teacher services; (3) outlining the various consultant teacher indirect services; (4) describing the direct consultant teacher services; (5) the importance of the regular classroom and the regular classroom teacher for the consultant teacher; (6) identifying the many Least Restrictive Environment, inclusion and mainstreaming issues important to the consultant teacher; and (7) addressing the varied supervisory and job responsibilities of the consultant teacher.

The purpose of this book is to provide guidelines to develop appropriate Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for children with disabilities based on the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act amendments of 2004 (IDEA-2004) or Public Law 108-446. These guidelines are intended to result in IEPs that are streamlined, focused, and reasonably calculated to provide educational benefit. Specifically, this work is directed toward developing IEPs that provide every child with a free and appropriate public education, rather than to develop IEPs that merely show compliance with IDEA but confuses rather than addresses educational needs. The book contains detailed information emphasizing several important needs for: (1) developing a streamlined IEP process; (2) providing guidelines for IEP forms; and (3) providing a model for refocusing the IEP from a monitoring/compliance device to a document that actually represents an appropriate and individualized educational plan. Every state is required to develop a model IEP form, and the information contained in this book includes basic strategies and a basic model IEP form for achieving this task. Additional major topics include IEP planning, amendments, prereferral and referral, teams and meetings, individual evaluation, student information, Present Levels of Academic Achievement (PLAA), modifications and accommodations, measurable annual goals, IEP services, location, signatures, and reports. In the appendices, a sample IEP Form is included and a description of Public Law 108-446 is given. The strategies and discussions contained in this book will provide positive direction for the educational profession, as well as improve the quality of education for students.
