In 1933, in a plane flying over the New Guinea Highlands, patchwork gardens were spotted in a valley between two mountain ranges. Believe it or not, this was the discovery of the Chimbu, a group of people who had remained isolated for thousands of years. This society had nothing whatsoever to do with Western "culture." The author, an anthropologist, recognized these survivors as an amazing opportunity to record that civilization. Dr. Brown spent the best part of 15 years involved with these people. Truly fascinating.
