Before the turn of the century, Tierra del Fuego (Fireland), the archipelago between the Strait of Magellan and Cape Horn at the very tip of South America, was one of the most wild and forbidding regions on earth-remote, unknown and inhabited by hostile tribes. E. Lucas Bridges was born into this inhospitable environment in 1874, at Ushuaia, a remote outpost run by his missionary parents on the southern coast. As a boy he worked in his father's fields and played with Yaghan Indian children, from whom he learned Yaghan ways, legends and language. Later, Bridges became friendly with the Ona, fierce, nomadic hunters who resisted any encroachment on their hunting grounds. E. Lucas Bridges, tercer hijo de Thomas, nació en la Misión de Ushuaia en 1874, se crió entre yaganes -indios canoeros que habitaban las costas del canal Beagle-, de quienes aprendió su lenguaje, leyendas y formas de vida, y mas tarde establecería relaciones con los onas -cazadores nómadas que habitaban el interior de la isla- de quienes se haría amigo, consejero y defensor. El ultimo confín de la Tierra fue publicado por primera vez en Londres en 1948, un año antes de la muerte de su autor, y fue aclamado por The New York Times y The Sunday Times de Londres. Pronto se convirtió en un clásico de la literatura y la mejor obra jamás escrita sobre la Tierra del Fuego.
