These marriage and death notices have been abstracted from The Laurensville Herald, Spartanburg Express, The Spartan, the Conservatist (Newberry), The Newberry Sentinel, The Rising Sun (Newberry) and The Lexington Flag, Temperance Standard and Lexington Telegraph. These are the only newspapers that could be located from the Districts of Spartanburg, Laurens, Newberry, and Lexington, South Carolina, for the years prior to 1866. These notices contain the names of over 5,207 persons mentioned in these newspaper extracts.

Since South Carolina did not officially keep Vital Records until 1911, makes researching within old newspapers extremely important. These notices of marriage and deaths are taken from the first newspaper in Upper South Carolina. They cover the entire state of S.C. as well as from counties in Georgia and North Carolina. They contain a wealth of genealogical information in that they often give the parents of the bride, as well as former place of residence of those whose obituaries appear herein. Pendleton District was a major point of migration from S.C. into Georgia and other states.

Marriage & Death Notices from Pendleton Messenger, 1807-1851

These are abstracts of Wills and all Estate Papers for the period 1770-1796. These include the later counties of York, Chester, Fairfield, Richland, Lancaster, Kershaw, Sumter, Claredon, Claremont, Salem and Lee. Heretofore, these records have not been microfilmed and hence have only been available to the genealogists at the Court House in their original packages.

Camden District, South Carolina, Wills and Administration 1781-1787

Notices included in this book are from Camden, Kershaw District, Fairfield and also Chester, York, Darlington, Newberry, Marlboro, Orangeburg, and Charleston District; and the border counties of North Carolina, viz Anson, Richmond and Union. Notices of persons who removed to the states of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida are found. Obituaries from persons who served in the Revolutionary, War of 1812, Mexican and Confederate Wars are contained in this volume.

The Southern Christian Advocate was the publication of the Methodist Confrence of both South and North Carolina, Georgia and Florida for the period 1837-1878. It also covered other states as well, such as: Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama and occasionally containing notices from other states as well. Vol. #1 contains the names of approximately 70,000 indivuals and Vol. #2 which covers the Civil War period, contains the names of approximately 30,000 indiviuals. The marriage notices will often times have “son of” “daughter of” etc.. This is very important source for information when doing Methodist ancestry. Considering that the State of South Carolina did not officialy start keeping vital records until 1911, these notices take on an added importance. North Carlina requirment for marriage licenses (as opposed to bonds) did not come into effect until 1868. And some Georgia counties have lost their marriage records. Considering the time frame of these books makes these marriage notices important because many times couples will move away from where they were married and finding a marriage record can be very difficult to locate if the county and state of the marriage are not already known. The death notices within these books are mini-biographies of the deceased persons, often times giving places of birth and former residences. During the Civil War years, many persons could not afford tombstones or erected only wooden markers which have not survived and hence these books become even more impotant to the reacher.

Marriage and Death Notices from the Southern Christian Advocate 1837 to 1860

This volume contains a map of the original land grants on Rocky Creek in that county. Also, includes lists of deeds and probates recorded, tavern licenses, bastardy bonds cases (naming usually both parents), jury lists and several previously unknown marriage bonds. Many settlers from Virginia and Pennsylvania are found here as well as many Revolutionary War veterans.

Chester County, South Carolina Minutes of the County Court 1785-1799

Since South Carolina did not officially keep Vital Records until 1911 makes researching within old newspapers extremely important. The reader is cautioned to note that all legal records for Georgetown County were destroyed by fire in 1865. These notices cover the counties of Georgetown District, viz. Georgetown, Horry, Marion, and Williamsburg. Also, notices are to be found from neighboring counties of Charleston, Darlington and Sumter.

This book of newspaper abstracts not only covers the Pickens District but also Pendleton District. Located in the Northwestern part of the state, Pickens District was carved out of Pendleton District in the year 1828. These abstracts from the newspaper concentrate on the MARRIAGE & DEATH NOTICES covering the time frame of 1849-1851, 1857-1861 & 1865-1868.

Marriage & Death Notices from the Southern Christian Advocate, 1861-1867. (Volume #2)

These court minutes are the earliest extant records from this crucial South Carolina county. Many persons left Edgefield and migrated across the Savannah River into Georgia and other states west. In these records are listings of more than 175 early deeds which cannot now be located! This makes these probably the MOST VALUABLE court minutes in all of South Carolina. Also Edgefield was one of the largest counties in South Carolina at the time, comprising all or part of the present counties of Edgefield, Saluda, Aiken, Greenwood, and McCormick.
