Marriages of Surry County contains abstracts of all extant marriage bonds and licenses for the period 1779 until 1868 when bonds, as prerequisites for licenses, were discontinued. The data in this volume are arranged throughout in alphabetical order by the surname of the groom, and each entry provides the name of the bride, the date of the marriage bond, and the names of the bondsmen, clergymen, and justices of the peace. Altogether the text bears reference to approximately 16,000 persons.

Tryon County was formed from Mecklenburg County in 1769. At one time Tryon County included all or part of the N.C. counties of Burke, Cleveland, Gaston, Henderson, Lincolm, Polk, Rutherford, McDowell, and the S.C. counties of York, Chester, Union, Cherokee, Spartanburg, Greenville, Laurens, and Newberry.

Lewisburg, Orange, Lexington, and Winton Counties were formed in Orangeburg District, South Carolina, in 1785. Winton County was renamed Barnwell County in 1868. Winton County "is the only county of Orangeburg District which has eighteenth century records extant. We have Winton County Court Minutes, 1786-1791, and deeds for the same period, with the wills beginning in 1787, when the circuit court districts ceased that function. . .This volume contains a transcription of the court minute book, which includes a tax list for the year 1787, and abstracts of the instruments in Will Book 1. The original loose wills and estate papers for the period 1787-1791 have not survived. They probably perished with the Orangeburg District records in 1865." Spartanburg County included a large portion of present Cherokee County, S.C. and was bordered by Greenville Laurens, and Union Counties, S.C. and Rutherford County, North Carolina. The border changes between Spartanburg, Greenville, and Union counties make it an important tool for researching those counties as well. These minutes contain lists of deed recorded, wills, and estates probated, road juries, petit and grand juries, tavern licenses issued and small court cases.

Spartanburg County, South Carolina Minutes of the County Court, 1785-1799.

Fairfield was one of the couties formed from the Camden Distict in 1785. It is surrounded by the counties of: Chester, Kershaw, Newberry, and Union. Part of this county was taken in 1791 to form Kershaw County. These minutes contain lists of deed recorded, wills, and estates probated, road juries, petit and grand juries, tavern licenses issued and small court cases.

Fairfield County, South Carolina Minutes of the County Court, 1785-1789

Since the Lancaster County probate records were destroyed in 1865, this is the only basic record left for this valuable county. A few wills were recorded in these deed books, as well as a number of deeds for the BURNED-OUT Chesterfield County. Kershaw County was formed from part of Lancaster in 1791.
