Emphasis is on a broad description of the general methods and processes for the synthesis, modification and characterization of macromolecules. These more fundamental chapters will be supplemented by selected and detailed experiments. In addition to the preparative aspects, the book also gives the reader an impression on the relation of chemical constitution and morphology of Polymers to their properties, as well as on their application areas. Unter den fur die technische Verarbeitung von thermoplastischen Kunststoffen erforderlichen Bedingungen konnen verschiedene chemische Reaktionen ablaufen, von denen die meisten in der Praxis unerwunscht sind, da sie die Qualitat der Fertigprodukte vielfach ungunstig beeinflussen. Trotz der grollen Bedeutung von solchen V organgen fur die Kunststoffverarbeitung fehlt es bisher noch sehr an systematischen Untersuchungen hieruber. In dem vorliegenden Bericht wird daher der Versuch unternommen, die che- mischen Vorgange wahrend der Thermoplastverarbeitung unter einem einheit- lichen Gesichtspunkt darzustellen. Als Grundlage hierfur dienen auller der auf den meisten Teilgebieten nicht sehr umfangreichen Literatur eigene Unter- suchungen, die seit 1960 mit Mitteln des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen, seit 1963 mit Unterstutzung der ArbeitsgemeinschaftindustrielJer Forschungsvereinigungen (AlF) gefordert wurden. An den eigenen Untersuchungen waren zahlreiche Mitarbeiter beteiligt, deren Anteil aus den Zitaten hervorgeht; der Verfasser mochte ihnen allen auch an dieser Stelle fur ihre Hilfe vielmals danken. .
