"Curly, the Orphan Calf" was written on March 22, 2017, several weeks after fires destroyed large parts of western Kansas, northern Oklahoma and Texas. The loss of cattle, homes, and livelihood was tremendous. People from all over and especially those with connections to agriculture, came together to donate cash, fencing supplies and machinery, hay, labor, and even cattle. In the following weeks, huge caravans of hay and fencing supplies headed west and south through Kansas. As someone who grew up in agribulture, it was all very emotional to me. My heart broke for their loss, but was full at the outpouring of help from so many strangers. In that mix of emotions, this book was written. May it be a tribute to the tenacity of the people who lost so much and a thank you to all those who helped in their time of loss.

From the Author\nWest by Rail, a Brother's Wish is the second book in my historical novel series, "Home on the Range." When I was picking the name of this series, I debated on several. I chose this one because all of my books have a central theme of looking for a home in the west. In addition, that name has its roots in Kansas. Some of you may be familiar with the song, "Home on the Range." It was written in Kansas. Combine those reasons with the fact that I am Kansas born and you have the perfect name. Because my novels are historical, I have done much research to ensure that they are both geographically and historically accurate. I love western history and I love to write so it has been a natural marriage of two passions. North to Cheyenne, the Long Road Home was the first novel in this series and was the first novel I had ever written. I wrote it in three weeks so it was also the fastest write of any of my novels. This one took about six weeks to write. Of course, there were many more hours than that of editing and polishing as it moved through the publication process. As of this time, I have now completed the fifth novel in the series and expect to publish two per year. Although they are a series, I have tried to also make them free-standing. Characters that you see in the first novel will be reintroduced in the second and the third. As I moved into the fourth and the fifth novels, new characters and locations were introduced. Book number four will move to Montana while book number five will be a cattle drive from Texas to Dodge City, Kansas. The nature of the locations made it impossible to include all of the characters from the first three since they centered around Cheyenne, Wyoming; however, you will see one favorite character and one loved mule in every novel. Book number six which I am just starting on will bring some of the original characters back to meet with the characters in novel number five. I like to incorporate real people from the time period into my stories. Sometimes, I am able to use a described personality while other times, I enhance what I find to make the character more a part of the story. For example, in novel number five, you will see Mary Loving mentioned. She was the wife of Oliver Loving, one of the founders of the Goodnight/Loving Trail. I read little about her so I created a personality for her, one fitting for the wife of a cattle baron as well as a woman who loved the cowboys who worked for their ranch. Women in the 1800's had to be tough and you will see tough but tender women throughout my books as well. I hope that you enjoy this book. I try to pull all of the reader's emotions from tears to laughter. I want the characters to be so real to you that they become your friends by the time you finish the book--and you will be waiting anxiously for the next book to see what your 'friends' experience in it.
