This album is a striking self-portrait, the highly powerful image of a man who recognises himself, finds himself in other faces, in shapes in repose, in trees and flowers.

We learn all about him in a few strokes: the bodies he loves in the privileged moments when they give way to narcissic sleep, inner life that he discloses behind lowered eyes or foreheads, the pleasure he feels on encountering a bouquet or a robust plant, the almost magic placing of objects, furniture, windows and doors in an ensemble where they retain on earth a vision halfway between dreams and reality.

In the work of Pierre Boncompain silence reigns and we instinctively respect it.  We do not speak in front of his pictures, our attention captured by the peace they are steeped in, this longing for Summer, these haunting blues, these ochres and these yellows of Provence, this festival of light, good taste and discretion.

You may look in vain for grandiloquence or distortion.  Reality is beautiful, why betray it?  It is simpler -- and infinitely more difficult -- to greet this show of happiness when it occurs.  It seems to me that Pierre Boncompain has done this successfully.  If I had to define him, I would say that he is an artist whose thoughts may be easily read.
