The first comprehensive publication on Mexican-born artist Bosco Sodi, whose paintings and sculptures combine preindustrial minimalist and arte povera traditions with elements of Oaxacan and Japanese culture. Sodi has described his creative process as "controlled chaos" that makes "something completely unrepeatable and unique." In his most celebrated body of work, the artist mixes raw pigment with sawdust, wood, pulp, and natural fibers to create the dense surfaces of monochrome paintings. As the layers of material dry, fissured "landscapes" form without the guidance or intervention of the artist. Sodi's sculptural process reflects traditions of his Mexican heritage. At his studio, Casa Wabi, in Oaxaca, he uses raw earth clay to create kiln-fired cubes, spheres, and bricks. Stacked into columns as minimalist sculpture or assembled as a field or wall, these projects range in scale from architectural installations to earthworks. Sodi also collects solidified volcanic magma from the Ceboruco volcano to make rock sculptures. These fragments are coated in a ceramic glaze and precious metals, uniting geological processes with art-making techniques. This book reflects Sodi's distinct material processes, with essays detailing his relationship to Oaxacan and wabi-sabi aesthetics, as well as his engagement with artistic traditions ranging from minimalism to arte povera to land art.

A unique and multi-faceted talent, Juan Navarro Baldeweg is one of the two most highly acclaimed Spanish architects living today. Also a brilliant artist, his paintings have been exhibited at galleries and art fairs all over the world. The goal of this superbly produced book, which was designed by Baldeweg himself, is to reflect the many sides of his eclectic character. In a running discourse he reveals his own view of architecture and art, while a commentary by J.M. Bonet, Director of the IVAM Modern Art Museum in Valencia, provides insight into Baldeweg's artistic career. Art works presented include paintings, photographs, and drawings; architectural projects areaccompanied by sketches, plans, situation maps, axonometricdrawings and photographs. In 1998 Juan Navarro Baldewegwas awarded the highly coveted Heinrich-Tressenow Gold Medal for architecture (previously won by Zumthor and Grassi), and in recent years he has won several international competitions. If any music can be said to be painterly, it is that of Morton Feldman (1926-1987), one of the most influential composers of the twentieth century. Feldman (1926-1987) was deeply immersed in the milieu of New York Abstract Expressionism, and found analogies in sound to the materiality of Pollock, the gravitas of Rothko and the hesitant, venturing brushstrokes of Guston. Taking as its departure point an exhibition Feldman curated in 1967 titled Six Painters, Vertical Thoughts considers the impact that postwar American art had on Feldman's own compositions. It features works by the titular six painters--Guston, Kline, Mondrian, de Kooning, Pollock and Rothko--and by other artists whom Feldman admired, such as Kitaj, Rauschenberg and Twombly. Also reproduced are works from Feldman's own collection, including his Middle Eastern and Asian rugs, archival photographs and ephemera, musical scores and record covers of compositions dedicated to artists such as Guston and Rothko, and interviews with and writings by Feldman himself.
