This book is one of the two textbooks that support an integrated course offering for Statics and Mechanics of Materials. Hopefully the integration of the topics of these two closely related courses will make the learning experience for the students easier and more meaningful. The content in the Mechanics II (Mechanics of Materials) is a revision of a part of the content in a book titled Design Analysis of Structural Elements published several years ago. The book titled Design Analysis of Structural Elements was too long and too heavy. It required a supplement for the homework exercises. The textbook for Mechanics I (Statics) published in 2013 was also drawn from part of the content in Design Analysis of Structural Elements. Both, Statics ++ and Mechanics of Materials + published in 2015, have been revised by reorganization of materials based on reactions of instructors and students. The Statics course provides the first exposure of engineering students to the study of mechanics. While Statics is a relatively simple subject, many students find it difficult, and they often perform far below our expectations. In an effort to improve the curriculum, the Keystone instructors at the University of Maryland have been working to enhance the student’s learning experience when studying the courses in mechanics. The Statics ++ and Mechanics of Materials + textbooks indicate some of the changes in the philosophy adopted by the faculty, when presenting the subject matter traditionally offered in introductory mechanics courses. The content of the Mechanics I textbook includes methods for determining stresses and strains in uniaxial members, column buckling loads, and a discussion of material properties and material behavior.  Because we have included three topics not normally found in traditional Statics books, we have added the three plus signs to the subtitle Statics +++.    We introduced the concept of stresses in uniaxial members, because an analysis of the forces in some structural element is incomplete.  Determining the force is not sufficient to establish the safety of the structural member or to design its cross section.  However, it is easy to introduce stresses in uniaxial members s = P/A, and we have taken this important step toward a more complete analysis.  Next, we added a chapter on materials and material properties introducing yield and ultimate tensile strength.  Determining the stress and comparing this value with the strength of an engineering material enables the student to establish the safety factor or the margin of safety of the structural element.  We have found that extending the analysis to incorporate safety and/or design improves the student’s interest and motivation.   We often include a project that involves student teams building a model of a truss, which is subsequently tested in the laboratory.  The students perform a truss analysis and predict the failure load of their model.  In testing the models, we found that compression members on many of the trusses failed at loads much lower than the values predicted by the student teams.  These compression members were buckling at relatively low loads, while the stresses were lower than the strength of the model material.  This laboratory experience enabled us to discuss elastic instability and to demonstrate buckling.  We have added a chapter on Euler (elastic) buckling to this edition to enable the student to study and to begin to understand elastic instability in structures.

This textbook is one of the many titles that exist for a course in Mechanics of Materials. The content in the Mechanics of Materials text is a revision of a part of the content in a book titled Design Analysis of Structural Elements, which dates back to 2002. The textbook “Design Analysis of Structural Elements” was an integrated treatment of both Statics and Mechanics of Materials. However, it was too long and the students complained that it was too heavy. It also required a supplement for the homework exercises. Separate textbooks for Statics and Mechanics of Materials published in 2106, and were based largely on the content in Design Analysis of Structural Elements. Over the past decade several editions of both Statics and Mechanics of Materials have been published. The revisions and reorganization of the content was based on reactions of instructors and students. The organization of this edition of Mechanics of Materials was directed by Professor Michael Sutton, for his classes at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC.
