Abstract Adventure: A Kaleidoscopia Coloring Book

I started this book with a simple design using only curved lines, the next with only right angles, and finally acute and obtuse angles. Combining slight variations of these different line elements I created puzzle like shapes.  I keep the line elements consistently inconsistent within the design but always have a common theme to tie them together. All of the images in this book are designed so the lines at the edges of each page connect with the corresponding lines for every page side to side and top to bottom.

The drawings in this book are inspired from beautiful mandalas found in many different religious and cultural traditions. The meaning of mandala comes from Sanskrit meaning "circle”. Mandalas offer balancing visual elements, symbolizing unity and harmony. To create a concentric theme I selected a center point then built them out with radial lines and small shapes to make this book “Mandala Adventure”. A different approach was used compared to other mandala coloring books. Each design covers the whole page to give a new feel (symmetrical designs with an asymmetrical placements on the page) and offers up the whole page for coloring, instead of just a circle centered on every page. The wonderfully imaginative abstract images in Abstract Adventure IV were created free hand by artist Kendall Bohn. ''I let each drawing design itself. Each line influences the next from the first line to the last. It is in the nature of intersecting lines to form patterns within shapes. Overlapping shapes create depth. The lines flow outside the edge of the page so the patterns may continue undistorted. A pattern in an abstract form must stay consistently inconsistent to give the design order and reason. The ever changing patterns are common threads that run through the designs making harmonies that, like strings of musical notes, balance the composition. Harmony in abstract images is created through the slight variation of related shapes.'' 26 of the 52 designs are what I call "Clones".
