110 Favorites from the Collection features some of the most beloved and highly regarded examples from the Blanton Museum of Art’s permanent collection of more than 17,000 works. Founded in 1963, the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas at Austin is one of the foremost university art museums in the country and holds the largest public collection in Central Texas. The Blanton is especially recognized for its modern and contemporary American and Latin American art, Italian Renaissance and Baroque paintings, and encyclopedic collection of prints and drawings.
This volume offers a glimpse of the breadth and depth of the museum’s holdings, which span antiquity to the present and a wide range of media. Often simple in composition, the art of Waltercio Caldas invites a host of complex questions about perception and space. Caldas challenges not only the way we look at his objects in the moment, but also our perspectives on art more generally. For decades he has been a central figure in Brazilian art. While his influence extends across much of the art world, he has remained largely underrecognized in the United States. To make this exceptional artist more widely known to the U.S. audience, the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas at Austin and the Fundação Iberê Camargo, a premier art organization in Porto Alegre, Brazil, have organized the exhibition The Nearest Air: A Survey of Works by Waltercio Caldas.
The exhibition catalog Waltercio Caldas is the first illustrated English-language publication to fully explore Caldas’s four-decade artistic trajectory, his influences, and his impact. The catalog includes essays by the exhibition’s curator, Gabriel Pérez-Barreiro, director of the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros; leading art critic Robert Storr, Dean of the Yale University School of Art, who investigates Caldas’s work in relationship to that of his international peers and its importance in the history of art; and renowned art historian Richard Shiff, modern and contemporary art professor at the University of Texas, who discusses key Caldas works that epitomize his investigation of the history of art. The catalog also includes a selected chronology of the artist’s career and a selected bibliography.

The Blanton Museum of Art's Latin American catalogue will be the first publication in the museum's history to present a complete and in-depth study of the institution's notable Latin American collection. The Blanton's holdings comprise one of the oldest, largest, and most comprehensive collections of modern and contemporary Latin American art in the country, and include works by many artists not represented elsewhere in U.S. collections. The collection contains more than 1,800 modern and contemporary paintings, prints, drawings, and sculptures, reflecting the great diversity of Latin American art and culture. More than six hundred artists from Mexico, South and Central America, and the Caribbean are represented in the collection. This beautifully illustrated catalogue features 102 artists from the Blanton's Latin American collection, such as Joaquín Torres-García, Julio Alpuy, Gonzalo Fonseca, Luis Felipe Noé, Rómulo Macció, Jorge de la Vega, Antonio Seguí, Luis Camnitzer, and Cildo Meireles. New and emerging artists such as Jorge Macchi and Cristián Silva are also represented. The catalogue includes essays and object entries by a host of distinguished contributing writers that provide an opportunity for new interpretation and insight into this significant collection, and the field of Latin American art in general.

With the Blanton's new American collection catalogue, students, scholars, and art lovers alike will have the opportunity to trace the history of artistic achievement in the United States from the last century to the present day through this most important collection of American art. The core of the Blanton's American art collection was formed by the significant gift of the Mari and James A. Michener Collection, which came to the museum in 1968 and 1991. Today, the Blanton's collection of modern and contemporary American art is a significant resource of more than 4,000 paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, and works in new media from 1900 to the present.This attractive catalogue thoroughly presents selections from the collection's noteworthy concentrations: early American modernism, the American scene and social realism, abstract expressionism, and paintings of the 1960s. Artists represented include Jo Baer, Jim Dine, Philip Evergood, Helen Frankenthaler, Arshile Gorky, Adolph Gottlieb, Hans Hofmann, Ellsworth Kelly, Franz Kline, Jacob Lawrence, Brice Marden, Joan Mitchell, Mark Rothko, Peter Saul, Ben Shahn, Raphael Soyer, and Richard Tuttle, among many others. La línea continua: The Judy and Charles Tate Collection of Latin American Art celebrates a significant moment in the history of patronage at the Blanton Museum of Art and in the study of Latin American art. Judy and Charles Tate are among the University of Texas at Austin’s most exemplary alumni and friends. Their most recent contribution to UT comes in the form of the gift of their collection of modern and contemporary Latin American art to the Blanton. The Tates’ gift promises to foster new opportunities for study across disciplines and will greatly enhance the holdings of the museum, which has been a leader in the field of Latin American art since the late 1960s. This fully illustrated catalogue of the collection will include approximately 120 works of art by many of the artists who were key to the creation of modernism in Latin America, including Tarsila do Amaral, Lygia Clark, Frida Kahlo, Wifredo Lam, Carlos Mérida, Armando Reverón, Diego Rivera, Xul Solar, and Joaquín Torres-García. The catalogue will also feature contributions from UT president William Powers, Blanton curator of Latin American art Beverly Adams, and UT art and art history graduate students, as well as Blanton director Simone Wicha in conversation with Judy and Charles Tate and Gabriel Pérez-Barreiro, director of the Patricia Cisneros Collection.

Painted Cloth explores the production, meaning, and representation of garments used in civil and religious settings across Latin America during the 1700s. Both the exhibition at the Blanton Museum of Art and this accompanying catalogue, reflect on the ways in which clothing played an essential role in articulating socioeconomic, gender, and racial identity among various Indigenous groups, African slaves, Spanish colonizers, and their mixed-raced descendants. The project spotlights aesthetic components of the artistic production of the Spanish Americas while also encouraging wider conversations about the impact of the colonial period in shaping the social fabric of the region.
