<p>The late thirteenth-century Southwest was characterized by environmental change and a related dramatic population shift from north to south. The associated appearance, dissemination, and subsequent disappearance of the pottery known as Salado Polychrome has until now been poorly understood. Crown's exhaustive study provides evidence of a Southwestern Regional Cult, an ideology that unified the disparate groups who came to share the region and resulted in the manufacture of the distinctive pottery over a wide area.<br>In the most comprehensive study ever undertaken on southwestern pottery, the author examines the context of the recovery of vessels, their probable use, the imagery of the designs, evidence for the mode of production, and independent evidence for the existence of a new religious ideology. Her results suggest the presence of an inclusive ideology that helped to stabilize social relations during this time of upheaval and change in the prehistoric Southwest. Ceramics and Ideology contributes to both the theory and methodology of the study of the greater Southwest.</p>

The Classic Maya collapse has engendered a great deal of debate over the last decades. This collapse was a highly variable phenomenon that did not affect the whole Maya zone, so the specific events and processes taking place in different regions affected by this "transition" need further exploration. This volume examines the economic parameters of the collapse in the Petexbatun region from the eighth through the eleventh centuries A.D. through the lens of ceramic manufacture, production, consumption, and exchange. It explores this critical time period through ceramic analysis, including type:variety classification, standardization studies, and chemical provenance research.These ceramic data are then used to reevaluate different models explaining the Classic Maya collapse--the foreign invasion theory, the commercialization hypothesis, and the internal warfare model. Seibal is a major ruin of the southern Maya lowlands, its vast ceremonial center covering several high hills on the banks of the Pasion River in the Guatemalan Department of Peten. In five volumes published over a 15-year period, the archaeological team headed by Gordon R. Willey presents a comprehensive review of their fieldwork from 1964 to 1968 and the results of many years of subsequent data analysis. The volumes also report on explorations in the peripheral settlements outside of the Seibal center and provide a regional view of the evolution of lowland Maya culture from the Middle and Late Preclassic through the Late Classic periods.
