The author argues that because the profession of nursing consists of practical ways of fostering the well-being of persons, ethical considerations must arise out of the unique nature of this work. This book focuses on the "moral sense of nursing" by developing nursing ethics as it is rooted in everyday practice rather than the application of philosophical ethics.This implies a "therapeutic ethic" that is founded in caring: two of the four primary themes of the book deal with the concept of caring. In addition, this book argues that such a nursing ethic has an evocative or inspirational side: the decision to become a nurse implies a call to caring. The interpretative nature of this brief text advances our understanding of both nursing and ethics.

Explores deep intimate personal relationships between men and women. Culminating a twenty-year personal and scholarly quest, the authors explore the phenomenon of loving relationships (minus the sexual attraction) between men and women. They articulate these relationships as dialogical love in which partners respond to each other’s presence personally rather than categorically as friend or lover. In a society where relationships of dialogical love are neither articulated and named nor recognized as acceptable ways of being, they are usually mistaken as affairs or regarded as “just” friend relationships. Churches have attempted to resolve the issue of homosexuality in the church through studies of scripture, doctrine, and scientific interpretation of sexual orientation. This approach has failed to produce consensus and has increased tension in the church. This book attempts a new approach by putting a face on homosexuality through disclosing how persons of faith who are homosexual and their parents experience the church. Their despair and hope is expressed in over fifty interviews with persons who are fundamentalist, mainstream, and liberal Christians. They describe their despair when confronted with either living in the closet or leaving the church. They express their joy in finding hope and encouragement in metropolitan community churches that specifically minister to them, and in mainline churches that are open and welcoming. These churches stress love and ministry to all. Change is fostered through prophetic communal life rather than dogmatic assertion. These interviewees replace the issue of homosexuality with faces of persons seeking faith and hope in the church.
