This catalogue of an exhibition at the J. Paul Getty Museum--to be held from October 10, 2006, to March 25, 2007--brings together a select group of paintings from Dresden's Galerie Neue Meister, which houses one of the most significant collections of nineteenth- and twentieth-century German art. This exhibition places at its core works from the two best-known painters from Dresden: Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840), a key voice of German Romanticism; and Gerhard Richter (b. 1932), the most celebrated German artist working today. The catalogue, one of the few resources in English on the subject, will feature paintings by Carl Gustav Carus, J. C. Dahl, Otto Dix, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff from the period between 1800 and World War I, the heyday of painting in Dresden. It will also introduce unfamiliar artists to a wider audience and juxtapose well-known painters in new ways. Included are essays on the history of the Neue Meister galleries and German painting from this period, entries on individual paintings, and an interview with Gerhard Richter.

In fact, every pebble and every hubcap is completely orchestrated, for these images are the result of considerable digital manipulation. Outstanding for his varied style and technique Max Ernst (1891-1996) is one of the most important figures of Dadaism and Surrealism. As a student in Bonn, he found himself drawn to the Dada movement that had arisen in counter-reaction to the mass slaughter of World War I. The closing of the famed Dada exhibit in Cologne for ’obscenity’ led Ernst to decide to spend the rest of his life in Paris, where he came in contact with the Surrealists. Above all, Ernst stands out for his varied style and technique, having produced an oeuvre that reaches from paintings, drawings and sculpture, across texts and stage settings to collage-novels and the development of his own ’frottage’ technique. During the World War II, Ernst, like many of his colleagues, became an ’undesirable foreigner’ and was forced to emigrate; after the war, however, he returned to his adopted homeland. In 1954 he received the Grand Prize for Painting at the Biennial in Venice and during the 1960s his work was honoured with major retrospectives. The Scream of self-liberation: Paintings by one of Expressionism's pioneers For Edvard Munch (1863-1944), painting was an act of self-liberation. His treatments of fear, desperation, and death still exert a powerful visual and psychological effect on modern viewers. Of all Munch’s paintings, "The Scream" (1893), representing a figure tortured by horror, is the most well-known-and certainly one of the most expressive. The artist reflected his innermost feelings in his work: "In reality, my art is a free confession, an attempt to clarify to myself my own relation to life..."
