Brycgstowe, 'the place at the bridge', as the Saxon founders of Bristol once called it, is a city of destiny. Once the second port in the country and one of the wealthiest cities in Britain, it has enjoyed centuries of prosperity based on manufacturing, seafaring and trade. Geographically split between the counties of Gloucestershire and Somerset and approached by sea through the dramatic Avon Gorge, the city received a Royal Charter in 1155.It was an industrial city described in the Georgian period as 'by mud cemented and by smoke obscured'. The Bristol of the past is illustrated here in drawings, paintings and photographs, many previously unpublished, from the superb collection held in the Bristol Central Reference Library's Local Collection. They are contrasted with modern colour images documenting the myriad changes the last century has seen in this pleasant city.

Westbury-on-Trym (sometime Westbury-super-Trym) was already old when its upstart neighbour Bristol was founded in the tenth century. With a famous collegiate church, Westbury played only a minor role in the nation's history. Later renowned for its wealthy households and a remarkably low poor rate, the medieval parish of Westbury encompassed fourteen modern parishes. The areas covered include Westbury village, Canford and Coombe Lanes, Coombe Dingle and Bowden's Fields, Henbury and Blaise, King's Weston, Lawrence Weston, Shirehampton and Avonmouth. The rare illustrations come from the author's own collection, private albums and the Bristol Reference Library, providing a wonderful historical record of the area.

'Preston, once a village with an independent life, is now Brighton', wrote Edward Verrall Lucas of the main subject of this volume in 1904. The same thing might also be said of Patcham and its hamlet of Withdean, which are the other protagonists within these covers. Preston and Withdean were noted for their trees in the 'barren waste' of Brighton. Their modern development followed the 1854 removal of the Preston turnpike. This volume is arranged geographically as a series of five textual peregrinations through Preston, Withdean, Surrenden and Patcham. One starts from the Preston viaduct while others commence from Preston Park Avenue, Preston Circus, Preston Drove and Preston Park's Rose Garden. The many previously unpublished illustrations come from the author's collection.

Wareham, once a quiet market town, is now the bustling historic gateway to the Isle of Purbeck. Wareham has a varied history that ranges from evidence of early Neolithic and Mesolithic settlers and even, interestingly, used as a garrison town, with 7,000 soldiers living and training there during the First World War. It grew very little before the twentieth century due to its environment but things were about to change both in Wareham and in Purbeck as a whole as the outside world discovered its delights. About the Author\nAnthony Beeson is the Hon Archivist of the Association for Roman Archaeology and a member of the Association for the Study and Preservation of Roman Mosaics and has appeared on the television program Time Team.\nThis book covers the development of mosaics in Britain from the invasion to the end of Roman Britain. The technical side of the art form is covered as well as prefabrication. It covers mosaics in towns and rural locations. Many of the mosaics have been lost but are recorded in colored engravings. Included is a pictorial glossary of the mythological creatures found on mosaics and sections relating the myths that are depicted on them. Reconstructions by the author of some sections of figured mosaics based on examples found elsewhere in the empire are included. The author's recent work on the newly discovered Boxford mosaic, the most important mosaic found in Britain for over 50 years, is explored here for the first time.

Special attention is paid to Roman water gardens, their pools and fountain designs. Nymphaea, garden ornaments, sundials, trellising, topiary and plants are included. The many illustrations are drawn from the author's collections and have been taken over decades of study throughout the Roman empire.Anthony Beeson is a board member of the Association for Roman Archaeology, a prolific writer of papers on Roman art and architecture, and has lectured on the subject of Roman gardens.
