Economic historians have long appreciated the important role of the Lowther family in the developing Whitehaven from a tiny fishing village into a flourishing industrial centre. In Coal and Tobacco, Dr Beckett has attempted, by analysing the west Cumberland economy, and the Lowther's entrepreneurial role, to reveal the vital importance of the coal industry. Since much of the coal was sold in Ireland, west Cumberland moved into a relationship with Dublin which was similar to, albeit on a smaller scale than, the more famous link between Tyneside and London. The coal trade provided the vital economic underpinning, but geographical considerations help to explain Whitehaven's other trading interests. Dr Beckett's major study is based on the Lowther papers, and reveals the crucial family involvement in these events. This book documents Lowther's story: how close he came to success, why he failed, and the impact of his ambitions on west Cumberland.

Laxton in Nottinghamshire is the last unenclosed village in England. Here, open field farming - once in operation across the entire Midlands and much of northern Europe - has survived into the modern era. In Laxton today, farmers carry on a thousand-year-old tradition, working their land in strips within large open fields, and remain subject to the authority of a manorial court. This book is a history of this village over the last millennium. J.V.Beckett focuses on two central questions: why has Laxton escaped enclosure for so long, and how has its medieval system of open field farming evolved to the present day. Drawing upon a wide and varied range of sources, he describes its inhabitants and their lives, its pattern of demography and migration, the working of the system of open field farming in the village, including ownership of land and its relation to local power structures. The author closes with a consideration of the ways in which farming in Laxton has responded to the demands of modern agriculture, and also of the features which remain unaltered. Whether Laxton's system of open field farming can survive in its present form amidst a rapidly changing rural scene is the concluding theme of this portrait of a unique part of England's heritage.

This book chronicles the rags-to-riches tale of the Grenvilles, who rose from the gentry to become dukes, making a fortune and building Stowe, one of England's great country houses, in the process - only to come close to bankruptcy by 1850 and eventually lose their title. John Beckett asks how this happened. He traces the rise of the family from their modest Buckinghamshire background in 1710 through a series of highly lucrative marriages, an earldom, a marquessate, a dukedom and, by 1822, a major landed estate spread across southern England and Ireland. He explores the disastrous profligacy of the first two Dukes of Buckingham and Chandos between 1813 and 1847, which nearly led to the family becoming the first landless dukes by the 1850s. He explains how the hardworking third duke managed to rescue a substantial portion of the estates, though the Grenvilles still failed to survive the cold winds of change which brought the downfall of so many landed families after the First World War. Today their showpiece house, Stowe, is a public school, and the dukedom is no more.
