This book tells the story of the enigmatic John Hacker, his innovative designs, and his opulent, well-constructed boats. Hacker was arguably the most significant runabout and power boat designer of the first half of the 20th century. He started Hacker Boat Company in Detroit in 1914 and drafted some of the most successful and popular designs such as the Belle Isle Bear Cat. The company was in its prime, and after opening a satellite location in Mount Clemens, Michigan, Hacker relocated his business, including all 68 employees, to the Mount Clemens location. Despite the horrendous economic impact of the Great Depression, Hacker Boat Company pressed on. John Hacker stayed with the business until 1935 and again moved on. Hacker boats were built until 1961. This book is organized chronologically with John Hacker as the through line, retracing his involvement with each company. The book concentrates on the boats, the drivetrains, and the evolution of powerboat design. It highlights the life and times of John Hacker as well as the key designers and company officers that worked behind the scenes.

This look back at the great boatbuilders that sprung up on the shores of the Great Lakes stretches from the first use of internal combustion for marine applications in the late nineteenth century to the early-1960s, when wooden construction was increasingly replaced by fiberglass and aluminum, and on to the early 1980s. More than covering lovely mahogany runabouts, this work also includes chapters on racers and cruisers/commuters. In addition to familiar names like Chris-Craft, Hacker, Century, and Lyman, there are also less frequently covered boats from names like Richards, Matthews, Burger, and Tiara. The final chapters explore the use of non-wood materials.Detroit was the epicenter of early-20th century boat-makers using engines from the nation's nascent automotive industry. Boat-makers, however, did not cluster as tightly around that city as did auto manufacturers; they were found from the Thousand Islands of Lake Ontario to Chicago and Duluth. Despite this regionalism the Great Lakes builders, more than any others, influenced the entire world's powerboating community.

The waters of the Great Lakes are among the most treacherous in the world. Violent storms churn up waves and unpredictable currents capsize large vessels or cast them onto shoals and rocks where they are battered to pieces. An estimated 10,000 ships have fallen prey to the fury of the Great Lakes during the 150 years of their navigational history. This figure compares to an equal number of disasters which have occurred over the past 300 years around the British Isles. Yet despite the fascinating nature of the topic and the enormity of the problem, there has been an absence of informative published material on this theme. James P. Barry's Wrecks and Rescues of the Great Lakes fills the gap. Shipwrecks on the Great Lakes began almost as soon as there were ships to be wrecked. One of the first vessels built there by the French, the Frontenac, was wrecked in 1679. The book reveals the severity of the weather through dramatic photographs of shipwrecks, and graphic descriptions of the events surrounding them. The Victorian and Edwardian wrecks on the Canadian shore are depicted in minute detail. The photographs of the wrecks on the American side between 1881 and 1910 show the frailty of those vessels. However, the more modern ships of the '20s and '30s were not immune to the power of the lakes. This fact becomes increasing clear in the depiction of recent disasters and daring rescue attempts. The moving description of the tragic loss of the Edmund Fitzgerald makes the reader keenly aware of the present dangers.

This fascinating book traces the development of Great Lakes forts from the 1600s to the American Civil War. The French, British, and Americans build military forts and established fortified trading posts and missions. Barry gives dramatic background, showing the forces that led to the building of the forts and sometimes to their destruction. He compellingly describes campaigns and battles. He gives us such colorful historical figures as Antoine de La Mothe Cadillac, Sir William Johnson, Chief Pontiac, Robert Rogers, and Anthony Wayne. Some twenty Great Lakes forts can still be seen, and the author clearly describes each as it is today and tells how history shaped it. From the strongest fort on the Lakes, Fort Henry, to the forts at key historic places along the Niagara Frontier and at Mackinac, the fur trade outposts at Grand Portage and Fort William, the mission of Sainte Marie, or the naval base at Penetanguishene, all are vividly presented. Here is particular information about forts that grew into cities as did Fort York at Toronto or forts that defended cities, such as Fort Ontario at Oswego and Fort Wayne at Detroit. Rare drawings, paintings, prints, maps, and vintage photos on nearly every page shows clearly the people and conditions that shaped history throughout the region.
